KilaDi No.1 Posted April 19, 2015 Share Posted April 19, 2015 పిల్లలకు గనుక కడుపులో నొప్పి వస్తోంటే "జీర్ణం జీర్ణం వాతాపి జీర్ణం.." అంటూ మంత్రం పెట్టడం అలవాటు. ఆహారం జీర్ణం కానట్లు అనిపిస్తే కూడా వయసుతో సంబంధం లేకుండా అందరూ ఇలా స్మరించుకోవడం ఆనవాయితీగా వస్తోంది. ఇంతకీ ''జీర్ణం జీర్ణం వాతాపి జీర్ణం..'' అనే నానుడి ఎలా వచ్చింది? దాని వెనుక ఉన్న కథేమిటి? అదే, ఇప్పుడు తెలుసుకుందాం. రాక్షస సోదరులైన వాతాపి, ఇల్వలుడు తమ చుట్టుపక్కలవారిని తెగ హింసిస్తూ ఉండేవారు. మనుషుల్ని నిర్దాక్షిణ్యంగా చంపేసి తినేవారు. వీళ్ళ దైత్య ప్రవృత్తికి తట్టుకోలేక అందరూ తప్పించుకు తిరిగేవారు. దాంతో రాక్షసులకు మనుగడ కష్టమై మరో ఎత్తుగడ పన్నారు. ఆ రాక్షసులు బ్రాహ్మణ వేషం ధరించి, దారిన పోయేవారిని నిలిపి ''తాము బ్రాహ్మణునికి భోజనం పెట్టదలచుకున్నామని, దయచేసి తమ ఆతిథ్యం స్వీకరించమని'' వినయంగా చెప్పేవారు. ఏరోజుకారోజు ఎవరో ఒక బ్రాహ్మణుడు ఈ రాక్షసుల మాటలు అమాయకంగా నమ్మి, బలయిపోయేవాడు. వాతాపి మేకగా మారగా, ఇల్వలుడు ఆ మేకమాంసంతో అతిథికి భోజనం పెట్టేవాడు. పాపం, ఈ మోసమంతా తెలీని బ్రాహ్మణుడు తృప్తిగా భోజనం చేసి ఇల్వలునికి కృతజ్ఞతలు తెలియజేసి, ''అన్నదాతా సుఖీభవ'' అని దీవించేవాడు. ఇల్వలుడు గుంభనంగా నవ్వి, ''వాతాపీ! బయటకు రా'' అనేవాడు. ఆ పిలుపు వినగానే మేక మాంసం రూపంలో ఉన్న వాతాపి, తక్షణం బ్రాహ్మణుడి ఉదరాన్ని చీల్చుకుని బయటకు వచ్చేవాడు. ఇక వాతాపి, ఇల్వలుడు - ఇద్దరూ బ్రాహ్మణుని మృత శరీరాన్ని సంతృప్తిగా భుజించేవారు. రాక్షసులకు భోజనంగా మారిన విప్రుడు తిరిగిరాడు గనుక మరో బ్రాహ్మణుడికి ఈ విషయం తెలిసే అవకాశం లేకుండా పోయింది. కానీ, నిజం నిప్పు లాంటిది. అది ఎప్పుడో ఒకప్పుడు బయటపడుతుంది. అనేకమంది విప్రులు మాయమవుతూ ఉండటంతో అగస్త్య్యుడు దివ్యదృష్టితో చూసి ఏం జరుగుతోందో తెలుసుకున్నాడు. వెంటనే వారి ఆట కట్టించేందుకు బయల్దేరాడు. అగస్త్య్యుడు ఏమీ తెలీనట్లుగా వాతాపి, ఇల్వలుడు తిరిగే మార్గంలో వెళ్ళి నిలబడ్డాడు. ఆ రాక్షస సోదరులు మహదానందంతో ఎప్పట్లాగే ''ఈపూట మేమో బ్రాహ్మణోత్తమునికి భోజనం పెట్టాలనుకుంటున్నాం. దయచేసి మా ఆతిథ్యాన్ని స్వీకరించి మమ్మల్ని సంతుష్టుల్ని చేయండి'' అని వేడుకున్నారు. ఆ పిలుపు కోసమే ఎదురుచూస్తోన్న అగస్త్య మహాముని చిరునవ్వుతో వారి వెంట వెళ్ళాడు. యథాప్రకారం వాతాపి మేకగా మారాడు. ఇల్వలుడు ఆ మేకను చంపి వండిన మాంసంతో భోజనం వడ్డించాడు. ఇక ఇల్వలుడు ''వాతాపీ, బయటకు రా'' అని పిలుద్దాం అనుకుంటుంన్నంతలో అగస్త్య్యుడు ''జీర్ణం జీర్ణం వాతాపి జీర్ణం'' అంటూ ఉదరాన్ని తడుముకున్నాడు. మహా మహిమాన్వితుడైన అగస్త్య మహాముని వాక్కు ఫలించింది. వాతాపి వెంటనే జీర్ణమయ్యాడు. ఇక తర్వాత ఇల్వలుడు ''వాతాపీ, బయటకు రా'' అంటూ ఎన్నిసార్లు పిలిచినా ప్రయోజనం లేకపోయింది. అగస్త్యుని కడుపులో జీర్ణమైపోయాడు గనుక బయటకు వచ్చే అవకాశం లేకపోయింది. అసలు సంగతి అర్ధం కాగానే ఇల్వలుడు పారిపోయాడు. అగస్త్య మహాముని వలన రాక్షసుల పీడ విరగడయింది. అప్పట్నుంచీ జీర్ణ ప్రక్రియలో ఇబ్బంది చోటు చేసుకుంటే ''జీర్ణం జీర్ణం వాతాపి జీర్ణం..'' అనడం ఆచారంగా మారింది. అది ఇప్పటికే ఆనవాయితీగా వస్తోంది.
