HINDUISM and HINDUTVA

Using the Words more Correctly

This is the kind of distinction that I might draw in class, to clarify the use of terms rather than to endorse. As a non religious person and as a Humanist obviously I am not in favour of any organized form of religion or its association with the state.

This note is maybe 10 years old, and the context was my observation that HINDUISM and HINDUTVA are being used interchangeably. But they are not the same.

For example, there is 'Islam' and there is 'political Islam'. Similarly,

There is 'Hinduism' (హిందూమతం or హైందవం) and there is 'Political Hinduism' or Hindutva (హిందుత్వం).

Hinduism or హిందూమతం or హైందవం is one of the great Faiths of the world. Belonging to it leads to an identity - it is based on certain beliefs about the Universe and the Human and how relations between Humans should be. It offers a certain concept of what is good and what is sin; what is pure and what is impure. Of course, like all ideas and superstitions of the past these beliefs lead to social organization that can be very damaging to humanity. Some leave or reject the terrible divisions of Varna and Caste and yet retain a faith in Hindu gods. Funnily, some reject the Gods of Hinduism and yet remain within, or are unable to leave, the social constraints of Hinduism. It requires a gigantic effort to be different in a society that has lived the same way for a thousand years.

Hinduism's leaders are the faith leaders like Swamis and Peethadipatis etc. and its places of congregation or prayer are homes and temples or even Religious TV broadcasts in modern times. We see the crying need for these people steeped in orthodoxy to modernize and also to understand Human Rights and universal human values.

It involves devotional rites and rituals. There are prayers and pilgrimages and cults and different formal and non formal organizations of people.

There are probably 100 crore Hindus. They do not all support all aspects of what is understood as Hinduism because Hinduism is not one single faith. Some need idols, while others reject them. Some seek to engage with the world, while others reject human society aiming to lead solitary lives. Others reject the world itself as an illusion. Still others spend this life thinking of the next.

Historically Hinduism has benefited greatly from religious reform from the inside. Reform is needed because things are not good, let us remember that.

Because of the way religions are, people are mostly born into the Faith. Same is the case with Hindus.

Many Hindus want to do good and find that this is best done by helping build temples or doing charity formally or simply responding as humans and taking care of neighbors or friends or those belonging to their caste group. others have categorically rejected Caste itself.

Usually, it will be an article of Faith that you will go to Hell if you do not accept some guidelines of the religion.

In general Hinduism is a way of life. It does not mean that Hinduism is not a religion. It is a way of life like all religions are ways of life.

If you reject Hinduism ie హిందూ మతం you cannot remain a Hindu as you have rejected the Faith itself, but there is no formal mechanism for leaving the religion.

The second is HINDUTVA హిందుత్వం which is not Faith but politics based on Faith and linked to the Nation State and a perception of its past or intended glory.

It is based on certain convictions about how the political organisation of society should be and what the nature of the State should be, usually linked to some aspects of Faith.

Its leaders are political party leaders or persons or organizations who mobilize people around this ideology. Its places of congregation or mobilization would be regular meetings, mass mobilization at political meetings or even political discussions on TV in modern times.

Charity is not the goal of this organization, rather political power is.

It is not easy to ascertain the number of people who support this concept, except to count the number of people who have voted for political parties which advocate Hindutva or Cultural Nationalism. Even here it is unclear because sometimes coalitions blur the political and cultural ideology. In any case, while guessing the numbers one needs somehow to take into consideration the huge number of non voters or not-yet-voters-young-people who may also subscribe to this understanding of politics. This number is likely to be high in a young country like India.

When you reject Hindutva you are not told you will go to Hell, you will be told, instead, to go to Pakistan or to Saudi Arabia.

In general Hindutva is a way of politics. Not of faith.

If you reject హిందుత్వం or political Hinduism your status as a Hindu is unaffected as you reject a certain politics or a political party, rather than the Faith itself.

Twisted facts and untimely and unnecessary declaration. Anduke swamulni panthullani elaa serious gaa teesukokoodado babu gogoneni laantollani serious gaa teesukokoodadu.

Have faith whichever faith it might be and learn, analyse and pick the best. We don't need to be customary if we can't but always believe with utmost sincerity. That's it!

Hindu ideology which is secular in nature by itself should be the guiding force.

What is 'secular' exactly from hindu ideology context..is it not there now..what should be modified from current position.

‘The world is one family’ is a secular concept kadha. We acknowledge existence of many gods. Other religions mostly are monotheistic and people that don’t follow them are called infidels/kafirs. There is a call to convert these infidels/kafirs to their fold in scriptures, so they are 24/7 engaged in such events. You have many examples before your eyes from history and current how their pursuit is relentless.

1500s lo some hard core muzzi destroyed a temple and built a mosque in UP. 1990s lo few hardcore hindus destroyed the mosque and in 2024 rebuilt the temple on a grand scale.

As an average Telugu guy, how does it effect me? I'm sure my ancestors knew nothing of destruction of Ram temple in Ayodhya. Even now it won't matter to me.

Finally Dharma is not about brute force atleast not in this digital age. Spread the good in your religion and numbers will come.
