Geographically, Maldives is not a strategic location for us anyways. I don't know why M's gov. created all this fuss around failed foreign policy with them. Given their religious affiliation, it's obvious they want to go against India. India should be more concerned with countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia (neighbors in the Bay of Bengal) siding with China. If these countries side with China, it will be hard for us to maintain leverage over the Indian Ocean. Currently, China is threatened by the fact that we can control Indian Ocean routes and most of the oil imports into China go through these routes. As per Canada is concerned, students have other options to consider like the US, Australia, etc. if Canada is not viable for them.
