Diwakar Reddy faction dealt a severe blow to the Congress by the former's supporters voting en masse to Mettu Govinda Reddy of the Telugu Desam Party and ensuring his victory in the MLC election . Govinda Reddy trounced his rival in the Congress Patel Venugopal Reddy by a majority of 53 votes .The total number of voters in the district was 810 and the number of votes polled was 784 while 45 votes were declared invalid .Mettu Govinda Reddy of the TDP polled 441 votes and the Congress candidate Patel Venugopala Reddy 388 votes .The animosity between the two groups in the Congress, the JC and the Raghuveera groups existed ever since Mr. Diwakar Reddy was dropped from the cabinet by late Y.S. Sitaram Kesri’s Congress, with 140 seats, gave outside support, and a government led by Deve Gowda, until then a factional politician from Karnataka, was formed.
