HAL draws flak; IAF begins crash probe

BENGALURU: With the Friday morning crash of Mirage 2000 claiming lives of two young test pilots, critics mounted attacks on defence PSU Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, which has already been under scanner for its performance.

Meanwhile, the IAF has ordered a court of inquiry (COI), findings of which will be submitted to the air headquarters and the ministry of defence. “One cannot accurately assign responsibility to any agency until the COI is complete,” one source said.

‘IAF not equipped with modern machines’

The crash raises serious questions about the PSU’s reliability, and reiterates critics’ views that HAL itself needs a complete overhaul.

Retired admiral Arun Prakash tweeted: “The Mirage was not being flown by ordinary pilots; these were superbly trained ASTE (Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment) test pilots. Mil (military) has, for decades, flown poor quality HAL machines and often paid with young lives but no reckoning of HAL management. Time to focus on leadership and directors of the giant PSU.”

HAL received a lot of flak on social media with users criticising it for not delivering machines of acceptable standards. “We generally don’t speak about HAL in public as they are our partners, and also because one shouldn’t advertise our weakness. But there is a big problem,” said an IAF officer. While HAL is usually slammed for delayed deliveries and poor capabilities, the upgrade of Mirage 2000 fleet is about avionics, computers, radars, electronic warfare suites, weapons, pilot-friendly electronic display systems, et al, and not about the landing gear or any other mechanical systems.

MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Saturday: “One wheel came off during take off and it veered off the runway...” Offering legal aid to the pilots’ families, he tweeted: “...If families want accountability from HAL —will ensure legal support for them.”

Experts cautioned that the age of the aircraft should be taken into account. “Just like any other machine, the older the item, the more prone it is to chinks. The Mirage has been serving the IAF since 1985,” one of them said.

The failure on part of the political leadership to equip IAF with modern machines has come under criticism. “The real cost of years of neglecting IAF modernization by callous, crooked politics of some — many lives of bravehearts like Sqn Ldrs Negi and Abrol — our airwarriors are flying 30-year Mirage, 40-year Jaguars and Avros,” Chandrasekhar said in another tweet.
