One genre that our film makers shy away from is Sci-fi genre of movies. Not just Tollywood, but also Bollywood makers rarely take up science fiction as their story element. Aditya 369(1991) is a film of genre, Science fiction, in fact first of its kind film. The film directed by Veteran Singeetam Srinivasa Rao and produced by Anita Krishna. Nandamuri Balakrishna plays the lead role in the movie. Mohini plays female lead. The film’s music was composed by Maestro Illayaraja. This movie was later dubbed in Tamil as Aboorva Sakthi 369Aditya 369was reportedly collected 9 crore rupees, at the time a new record for the Telugu film industry.

This story:

A high profile thief Raja Ravi Varma (Amrish Puri) has a queer hobby of burglary of expensive things of historical significance from all over the world museums. He makes an attempt to rob a diamond from Sri Krishna Devaraya time, that is preserved at museum amidst tight security. A school kid (Tarun)  on his excursion  to museum accidentally trapped inside the museum and happens witness the robbery, the kid manages to escape from the robbers and gets rescued from the museum by Krishna Kumar(Balakrishna).

Prof. Ramdas (Tinu Anand), a scientist who invents a ‘Time Machine’ at his home laboratory after tremendous effort eventually he becomes successful. His daughter Hema (Mohini) and her fiancée Krishna Kumar accidentally get into the time machine and travel all the way to past time, 15th century of Krishnadeva Raya’s Vijayanagara Empire. There they get to see the same diamond which have powers and that got robbed from the museum in present time.

Later in the movie, the couple gets to travel into the Future in the Time Machine where in, the world is destroyed through radiation effect after the end of Third World War and cities were built underground. The rest of the film revolves round how they get back to present time and take back diamond from Raja Ravi Varma to hand it over to museum.

Highlights:

The movie was a bold attempt to be made even for today, considering its story element and Balakrishna who has a mass hero image.  Singeetam Srinivas was always known for his experiments like Kamal Haasan starrers Vichitra Sodharulu(1989) in which twin dwarf is made a protagonist and Pushpaka Vimanam(1987), a silent movie.

Art direction has to be lauded for the film firstly for the hectic job done for visualizing two contrast periods never known to the audience. One is the period of kings and empires and the other being fictional future. The audience are literally taken back to golden era of Sri Krishna Devaraya. The palaces, the courtyard and the streets shown in that period is very realistic. In the second half we get into the fictional future where city of Hyderabad reconstructed underground after getting destroyed by IIIrd  world war. The half destroyed Charminar and futuristic gadgets were the highlights. Time machine needs a special mention, for remarkable idea of constructing it as a flying saucer.  The art director Peketi Ranga did a tremendous Job.

The music by Ilayaraja is great as always. All the songs were chart busters at the time. The background score was done to suit the different time periods was amazing. Especially the song ‘Janavule’ picturized on Balakrishna and Silk Smitha was a highlight. The song was composed to be felt like a old classic melody.

The costumes designing department need a special pat for designing costumes for different periods, we have movies earlier to show periodic look but futuristic costume designing need a amazing creativity. The costumes of Villain i.e. Raja Ravi Varma played by Amrish Puri must be appreciated for the Lord Dalhousie Costume that he wore in the film.

Balakrishna’s performance was classy in the film. His role of Sri Krishna Deva Raya reminds us of his father Late NTR’s performance as Sri Krishna Devaraya in Tenali Rama Krishna(1956). In Aditya 369 role of Tenali Rama Krishna was played by Chandra Mohan. The film also has comedy by Sutthi Velu and Sri Laxmi. Tinu Anand aptly suits the role of Scientist. Master Tarun played his part well. Aditya 369 was a wonderful movie that took audience for a ride of time travel.

Every one knows that first sci-fi movie in Telugu was Aditya 369 with casting Nandamuri Balakrishna,Mohini, Tarun and Amrish Puri. And now no one tried this genre in last 13 years..Still Balayya wants to do another movie in the same genre.Director Singeetham garu wished to do this genre again with balakrishna, if he have a good story.he said this in an interview about few months ago.
