AnnaGaru Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 After Coffee and Apple now Orchids to grow in Vizag agency idi Super idea. These are right now imported and too costly /*****************************Orchid farms to add colour to Visakha Agency*****************/ VISAKHAPATNAM: After the successful research projects on apple and dragon fruit cultivation, Chintapalle Horticulture Research Centre of YSR Horticulture University has now taken up another pioneering project -Thailand brand orchid species cultivation in the Agency area. The orchid has good demand in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana markets. Announcing that the pilot project which started with the success of cultivating the flowers on 1.5 acres of land, Principal Scientist (Horticulture) and Zonal Research Head of Coastal Zone-1 Prof BVK Bhagavan said, “There is good demand for the flowers. The main aim of the project is to train the tribal youth to be orchid flower farmers. In healthy conditions, each plant will give a minimum of 10 flowers and the life span of each plant is three years. We have procured 50,000 plants from Thailand and other works are going on. An eight to 10 months old plant will cost Rs 150 to Rs 200.” The Chintapalle Horticulture Research Centre after several experiments finally decided that Paderu, Araku, Chintapalle and Maredumilli agency areas are best suited for cultivation of the orchid flowers as the cold climate is conducive for cultivation of the flowers and grow well under the shading nets. The Research Centre has prepared a project report and submitted it to the government for approval. The Centre also said that the tribal youth would be trained to be entrepreneurs. The Research Centre has also informed the government that marketing support will also be extended to the tribal youth engaged in cultivating the orchid flowers. The NABARD has sanctioned Rs 5.5 crore to kick-start the pilot project at Chintapalle. The Chintapalle Research Station has decided to impart training to the tribal youth in batches, with each batch of 40 persons. However, guidelines have to be finalised for the training programme. Normally, science students are preferred for the training. However, there is no need of any educational qualifications for the practical training. The trainee must have interest in nature, plantation and cultivation, said BVK Bhagavan said. The orchid flowers have gained popularity owing to its eye-catching colour combinations and for the freshness that lasts for more than 48 hours. During the past decade, the sale of orchid flowers has increased and the decorative flowers are being used for beautification of marriage mandaps, venues of public meetings and several other functions. Apart from Thailand, the biggest exporter of these flowers, Pune and Mumbai also make a good business selling these flowers.

sonykongara Posted February 20, 2017 Author Posted February 20, 2017 Araku coffee to debut in Paris market this week Vipashana V K & Reeba Zachariah | Updated: Feb 20, 2017, 10.32 AM IST 32 Comments Highlights Araku coffee was originally a nonprofit venture supported by Naandi Foundation It was the brainchild of Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu and Anji Reddy, founder of Dr Reddy's. Araku coffee has already got a geographical indication (GI) tag. Representative imageMUMBAI: One hears of cooperative farming where government, NGOs or corporate entities provide resources or knowhow to support cultivation. But in the picturesque and protected Araku Valley of Andhra Pradesh, a unique agri enterprise has taken shape. Tribals from this region, with the backing of four business leaders, are growing top-notch quality coffee, which will make its debut overseas this week under an exotic brand. Anand Mahindra (chairman, Mahindra & Mahindra), Kris Gopalakrishnan (co-founder, Infosys), Satish Reddy (chairman, Dr Reddy's Laboratories) and Rajendra Prasad Maganti (chairman, Soma Enterprise, a construction company) have joined hands to form an enterprise that will launch Araku coffee's first store in Paris. For the 150-odd tribal communities living in the Maoist-infested belt, the global debut is a big step forward. Until 15 years ago, their life was dependent only on collecting forest produce. A predominantly tribal area (including the Bagathas, Valmikis, Kondus and Poorjas) in Visakhapatnam district, the Araku region is classified as an agency area; the government has created a special developmental and funding plan for locals. All the land here belongs to the government and a tribal is entitled to get land as much as s/he can till for free, to earn a living. Coffee cultivation is not new to the area—the British did it and the government continues to grow the beans under its own brand, but it was only in the recent past that tribals tried their hand at it on a large scale. From 1,000 acres some years ago, the land under coffee production has gone up to 20,000 acres. The four investors have stepped in to assist them in increasing bean production by roping in global experts. "We want to make Araku a gourmet coffee brand, acceptable in global markets and that's why we chose Paris for the debut," Mahindra told TOI, adding that the profits made from the venture will be ploughed back to improve the quality of the farmers' lives. Araku will be sold under five variants with the most expensive stock priced around Rs 7,000 a kg. The steep price can be justified by the fact that this is perhaps the first time in the world that coffee is being produced using techniques similar to those in wine making. Like unique tastes of different wines identified by the soil in which the grapes are grown, the variants of Araku coffee also draw their flavours from the 'terroir' or unique environment. "Araku coffee is unique because of its complex terroir and that's why premium. Everybody wants a simple life but they pay for complex things. Luxury is all about complexity," Mahindra said.
