Kiran Posted September 27, 2018 Share Posted September 27, 2018 The Centre Thursday constituted an eight-member search committee, to be headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, to recommend the chairperson and members of the anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal after a long delay. Former chief of State Bank of India (SBI) Arundhati Bhattacharya, Prasar Bharati chairperson A Surya Prakash and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) head A S Kiran Kumar are the members of the search committee, according to an official order issued by Personnel Ministry. Besides them, Justice Sakha Ram Singh Yadav, former judge of Allahabad High Court, Shabbirhusein S Khandwawala, former Gujarat Police head, Lalit K Panwar, retired IAS officer of Rajasthan cadre, and Ranjit Kumar are the other members of the panel, it said. “The search committee is a major step towards setting up of the Lokpal. The committee will start its functioning soon,” a senior official said. The search committee was appointed by the selection committee which comprises Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, leader of the largest opposition party, which in this case was Congress’ Mallikarjun Kharge and eminent jurist Mukul Rohatgi. Kharge, however, was not a full-fledged member of the panel and he boycotted the selection committee meeting five times this year, asserting that he would continue to do so until the leader of the single largest opposition party was given the status of a full-fledged member in the panel. Kharge was not present in Thursday's meeting and was instead participating in a protest against the controversial Rafale deal at the August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai. The appointment of the search committee has been delayed by several years.
