Varna refers to the categorization of the Hindu society by four castes, hypothesized by the Brahmins and their sacred texts. This quadruple division is not to be confused with Jāti or even the much finer division of the contemporary caste system in India.[1] The four varnas, or chatur varna, are mentioned in ancient texts in the following (stratified) order, from top to bottom,[citation needed]the Brahmins: vedic priests.[citation needed] the Kshatriya: kings, governors and soldiers.[citation needed] the Vaishyas: cattle herders, agriculturists and merchants.[2] the Shudras: labourers, artisans and service providers.[citation needed] The first three varna are considered Arya, and thus allowed to participate in Vedica rituals from which the non-Arya Shudra varna is excluded.[3][full citation needed] Separate and shunned by society, including the Shudras, were the "untouchables" such as the Dalit and the Chandaal (cāṇḍāla), who had to deal with the disposal of dead Modies and are described as dirty and polluted. There was a belief that one's Karma in the past, resulted in one's condition in this birth. "Now people here whose conduct is good can expect to quickly attain a pleasant birth, like that of a Brahmin, the Kshatriya, or the Vaishya. Satvik - qualities which include knowledge, light, happiness etc etc... Rajasik - Qualities which include anger, passion, constant activity etc etc.. Thamasik - Predominantly ignorant, sleep, etc etc. Based on these three qualities, Satvik, Rajasik and thamasik, the entire world is basically divided into four varnas.. Brahmans - Predominantly Satvik, they form the learning class, intellectual power of any socieity Khastriyas - Slightly Satvik and predominantly Rajasik, and they form the Ruling classes, bureacrats Vaishyas, - Rajasik with also certain traits of thamasik, and predominantly forms the business class Shudras - predominantly thamasik....include mostly the sections of society which involves physical labour.... in short, this is the classification as per our scriptures....and can we deny any society which doesn't fit into this classification...such classification or demarcation exists in every society universally.... chsrk
as per my understanding of how Untouchability came into existence....Long before we had alien establishments, we had our own system of Judiciary, which was very affective and jury based (done with public participation.....mana voorlo panchayati lu maadiri annattu....kondaru Nyaya saastralu chadivina peddalu prathi gramam lo unde vaallu, prajala samaksham lo praja amodham tho nirnayaalu chese vaallu)..Let us not forget that these systems were so much affective in our country, that the crime rate was almost near to zero... ikapothe, aa rojullo gramallo evadanna crimes ki social disorder ki paalpadithe vaallaki okanoka punishment....gramala ninchi veli veyyatam...itta siksha padina vaallantha vooriki avathala undetollu.....one more thing to note is....such people were almost from every caste in those days.... when british came in to india, they were the first to engage with these socially defranchized people.....took them under their fold, groomed them, pitted them against the mainstream society, indicted them into their armies on a much larger scale, so on and so forth.....vallani untouchables ani raka rakalaga frame chesi, mana society meedhake against ga turn chesaaru..... other than that, we dont have any classification based on dalits and untouchables in our scriptures........shudru lu andaru dalithule anna vaadham shudda abaddam....modern day kammas, reddies, kaapus, many other BCs were all shudras.....and certainly not untouchables....but very much part of mainstream society...
