Oppo-A71.jpg

A week ago, Oppo took the wraps off its new A71 smartphone. The mid-range handset has only been available in Malaysia so far but has now also made its way to India. It’s already listed on Flipkart’s website and will set you back Rs. 12,990.

The device comes in black or gold and sports a 5.2-inch display with HD resolution. You’ll find the MediaTek MT6750 chipset under the hood along with 3 GB of RAM. There’s only 16 GB of storage available, but you do have the option of expanding it for an additional 256 GB with a microSD card.

Oppo’s smartphone features a 13 MP primary camera with an f/2.2 aperture as well as a selfie snapper that has a 5 MP sensor. It packs a 3,000 mAh battery, has a metal body, and runs Android 7.1 Nougat with the company’s Color OS on top. Sure, its specs won’t blow your socks off, but it’s still a solid device that can get the job done and is also quite easy on the eyes.

Those of you interested in getting it can visit Flipkart’s website by clicking the button below.

If the new Oppo A71 isn’t really your thing, you have plenty of other smartphones to choose from that have recently been released in India. These include the Xiaomi Mi A1, Lenovo K8 Plus, as well as the Moto G5S and G5S Plus, among others.

Before Apple releases its new iPhone generation later today, Qualcomm wants you to know all about a few notable world firsts on Android — features or technologies that made their debut on Android smartphones with the help of Qualcomm.

The company took what looks like a subtle shot at Apple by posting a list of these features on its website, which includes things like fast charging, dual-camera technology, augmented reality, OLED and 4K displays, and even the bezel-less design, which we’ll likely see on one of the upcoming iPhones. You can check out all the features below.

Qualcomm is definitely correct, as certain Android smartphones have introduced new technologies with its help in the past and have later been used on iPhones. However, the funny thing about it is that Qualcomm isn’t the best at remembering on which devices these technologies actually made their debut.

As 9to5Google reports, the list shows that the first smartphone with an OLED display was the LG G Flex, when in fact it was actually the original Galaxy S that was released way back in 2010. Qualcomm also seems to think that the HTC U11, Xiaomi Mi 6, and the LG V30 (that hasn’t even been released yet) introduced Bluetooth 5 to the market. This is, of course, incorrect, as the first devices with this tech were actually the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus.

The last mistake Qualcomm made is also the funniest one. According to the company, the first smartphone with a dual-camera setup was the HTC One M7, which, as you probably know, only has one camera on the back.

However, it is worth mentioning that Qualcomm did realize it made a few mistakes and has since updated the list on its website in order to look more knowledgeable — too late for that.

Google has launched a mobile payments app in India that will work on both Android and Apple smartphones.

Tez allows users to make money transfers to each other and to buy goods from physical stores and mobile websites.

It is based on the country's Unified Payment Interface (UPI) standard - a government-backed system launched last year to encourage digital payments.

But it will have to compete with PayTM, a popular local mobile wallet system.

PayTM - which is part-owned by Japan's Softbank and China's Alibaba - already has more than 200 million registered users in the country.
However, the rival systems work on a different basis.

Tez - which is Hindi for fast - transfers money from a user's bank account directly to the recipient and thus acts as a replacement for a bank card, in a similar manner to Android Pay or Apple Pay.

By contrast, PayTM - which is an acronym for pay through mobile - involves first placing money into an "electronic wallet" before being able to use it to make cash-free payments. It launched in 2010 and has the benefit of already being widely adopted with several merchants offering discounts and cashback offers.

Launch partners
Google says that Tez works with all 55 banks that are already participating in UPI, including many of India's largest lenders.

However, the Tech in Asia blog noted that the majority of India's 150 eligible banks have yet to adopt UPI.

Other launch partners include Domino's Pizza restaurants, Jet Airways, the RedBus transport network and PVR Cinemas - India's biggest cinema chain.

Payments can be made by a variety of means:
  • by entering the recipient's UPI number, phone number or email address
  • via a "cash mode", which involves sending a short audio signal to another nearby phone - somewhat similar to Chirp's technology
  • using the app's in-built merchant "channels", which group together past purchases with the same store/service in a similar way to how conversations appear in chat apps
  • via third-party websites that have adopted the facility
Google provides the services without charge. It has been speculated that it might introduce additional profit-making functions at a later stage.

The US firm said Tez would soon be pre-installed on new handsets from Lava, Micromax, Nokia, and Panasonic.

To spur on its adoption, Google has also included an in-app "scratch card" offer, in which users can win a prize every time they make a purchase costing more than 50 rupees (78 cents; 57p).

The search giant is hoping that the public come to see Tez as being more convenient than PayTM and other similar wallet-based systems.

"It doesn't cost you anything to use Tez, and your money stays in your bank so you continue to earn interest," Google stated in its India blog.

"And best of all, because Tez works directly with your bank account, there's no need to top up a wallet balance or pay fees to get money out."

The country's Economic Times newspaper reported that the app would soon have competition from Facebook's WhatsApp, which is working on an update that will add UPI-based services and already has more than 200 million active users in India.

Early adopters have also faced a slow service when trying to use Tez, which Google has blamed on "higher than expected traffic".

Higher than expected downloads of Tez so some users may experience issues. We're working on a fix and we'll update asap. Thx for patience!

Google has introduced a new payment app in India called Tez (the Hindi word for “fast”). Tez features a technology called audio QR that allows users to transfer money using sounds to pair two devices. Called the “cash mode option,” phones negotiate a connection using audio to identify the payer and payee. (The sounds should be inaudible to human ears though because they’re sent using ultrasonic frequencies, according to the Financial Times.) The feature is therefore similar to cash transactions which don’t require the exchange of personal details like bank accounts and phone numbers. Cash Mode works with any phone with a mic and speaker and Tez app installed, and doesn’t require an NFC chip. Google’s Audio QR technology is similar to Chirp, which also sends data encoded in ultrasonic audio.

There are 300 million smartphone users in India, and phones with NFC are still relatively rare and expensive, with many users instead favoring entry-level and mid-tier devices. Tez is a step beyond Android Pay, because it allows users to link payment apps from Indian banks — it works with all of the country’s 55 banks on India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI). UPI is a system that allows numerous bank accounts to be linked into one mobile app, and enables secure peer-to-peer payment. According to Bloomberg, digital transactions have surged after the Indian Government banned high-value cash notes late last year.

Tez also facilitates bank-to-bank payments and is protected by Tez Shield, a data security platform from Google that detects fraud and protects user identity. Tez behaves like a chat app, using your contact list as a way to keep transaction history organized. People or businesses you’ve sent or received cash from grouped together “like a conversation,” Google says.

The company says small businesses can also use the app to accept payments into their bank accounts, and it also accepts payments from mobile sites with “just a few taps.” Tez is available on both Android and iOS, and Google plans to release the app in other emerging countries including Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand.

Last year’s Google Pixel series was far from affordable. The Pixel launched at $649 (32 GB) and $749 (128 GB), while the XL variant retailed for $769 (32 GB) and $869 (128 GB).

Although we all hope that the upcoming smartphones will be more affordable, this likely won’t happen. Word on the street is that the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will carry a premium price tag and will either cost the same or even more than their predecessors. Droid Life claims the Pixel 2 will be priced at $649 for the 64 GB version and $749 for the 128 GB variant. The larger Pixel 2 XL will reportedly cost $849 for the 64 GB version and $949 for the $128 model.

At this price point, Google will have a hard time competing on the market. It is believed that the tech giant sold one million units of the Pixel series so far, which might sound like a big number but actually isn’t really that impressive. Samsung, for example, sold five million Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus units after just 26 days of availability. And that’s despite having their initial release limited to a few key markets like South Korea and North America. Huawei is planning to sell a total of 10 million P10 and P10 Plus smartphones, while the LG G6 is also expected to outsell the Pixel generation by a wide margin.

In order to increase sales, the best thing for Google would be to lower prices, as that would make its upcoming smartphones a lot more competitive on the market. As already mentioned, that likely won’t happen, which means you’ll have to dig deep into your pocket in order to get the Pixel 2 or Pixel XL 2.

It looks like Google will slightly tweak the home screen on the next Pixel phones. Serial phone leaker Evan Blass published two images of the upcoming Pixel 2 XL today that provide not only our cleanest look yet at the device, but also our first look at changes to the Pixel’s home screen.

Most notably, the Google search bar is moving from the top of the screen to the very bottom, below the app dock. It looks weird at first glance, but the placement makes enough sense. The search bar is easier to reach lower down, and Google would obviously like Pixel users to take advantage of search as much as possible.

The other change is a new widget up top that appears to show the user’s next appointment and the current weather. That could be useful if you’re a religious Google Calendar user.

What we’ll have to wait to find out is whether any of this is customizable. On the original Pixel, Google included a weather widget and a Google search button, neither of which could be removed. That could get more annoying on the new Pixels, especially if someone isn’t fond of Google Calendar. There’s a possibility that the colors and styling of the search bar could be tweaked, though, which seems fun.

This leak of the Pixel 2 XL is also the first head-on view we’ve seen, which helps give a much clearer impression of what the screen will look like. This new leak makes it clear that the screen still has bezels on either side of it, making it look much closer to the LG V30 than the Galaxy S8. It also looks really tall. (It’s supposed to have a 6-inch screen.)

The image also clearly shows a second speaker on the bottom of the phone, which seems to confirm that both the smaller and larger Pixels will be getting stereo speakers this generation.

Google is holding an event on Wednesday to announce both Pixel phones and a bunch of other new devices, so come back then for all the details — though at this rate, there may not be much we don’t know.

The LG V30 now has a release date in the US. Well, release dates is more accurate. It’s coming to all four big carriers beginning early next month, but specific availability differs between them. Verizon is getting a jump on its competitors and launching the phone on October 5th. Full pricing info is “coming soon.”

Most others are taking preorders starting on that date, but in-store availability is all over the place. AT&T will launch the V30 just one day later on October 6th for $810 or $27/month for 30 months. T-Mobile says it’s coming October 13th for $800 or $80 down and $30/month for 24 months. This is the first device to support T-Mobile’s 600 Mhz LTE spectrum, which the carrier is making a big deal about. It’s the sixth device that AT&T classifies as “5G Evolution capable.”

Unlike the other carriers, Sprint will be selling the V30+ model, which comes with 128GB of storage, but at a higher price — either $38/month for 18 month through Sprint’s Flex program or $912 full retail price. The carrier is also offering a “lease one get one free” program for new and upgrading customers too.

LG’s V30 has a 6-inch OLED HDR display with minimal bezels, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor, 64GB of storage, 4GB RAM, a hi-fi quad DAC, dual cameras on back (one of them super wide-angle), unmatched manual camera controls, water resistance, wireless charging, and more. It’s definitely a powerhouse of a flagship phone if you can put up with LG’s software, which was my biggest gripe with an early preview unit.

But despite my complaints about the UX aesthetics, I can say that the V30 has remained incredibly fast through the weeks I’ve tested it — and battery life has also been strong. We’ll have to see whether both of those things still hold true with the final carrier devices, however. The October 5th preorder date is one day after Google’s October 4th event, where we expect to see the debut of the LG-made Pixel 2 XL. That’s likely to have the same display, but it will also likely lack many of LG’s specialties like the DAC and super-wide camera.
