Leave aside 'Liking - Disliking' territory which comes in relevancy zone, 'Respect' is the keyword. Unless you get 50% share and show numbers, it is tough to regain 'Respect' R brother; Language is not a big hurdle to make palatable to others.
One bitter truth - it was not NTR's charm, it was his numbers( more seats than other opposition to congress; mid 35/36's and BJP 2) that made the magic. With all due respect to great NTR - nobody would have accepted his invitation to opposition leaders' meeting, if he had only 2 seats and other non-congress parties got 300 plus seats.
We cannot overestimate our strength and drink cool aide from our own local commentary & newspaper writings(chakram tippatam, delhi lo nadipedi maname etc),our ego bulges up, we overstretch ourselves & make mistakes.
We can have our grievances & transactional issues with current big party in country, but can not go against our own grain(it seems okay in social media forums, but deep in our villages can not stomach hobnobbing with 'congress', it is blood/stains too, philosophy, decades long deep and also do not match with Tdp- founding values)

Good example - Never go against your core philosophy irrespective of relations with other parties.
Understand one Kalinga and one Maraatee, both current politicians - Both regional parties(which they belong) want to survive in the competitive game of politics, obviously one is wise enough to read the Macros right and kept his position & thrived in his realm.
Never overplayed his position, he understands his numbers even on a sunny day, that is the trick. Where as other in the 'josh' of competitive politics, even went against his core philosophy, stretched too thin and decimated.
