“To begin with, the channel will beam all news related to the state government through its Fiber-to-Home (FTH) network,” says APSFL chairman P. Goutham Reddy. Plans are being drawn to widen the content and coverage to match the growing reach. “We are looking into various aspects related to the airing of the channel, including the prospects of outsourcing content needs,” says a senior Andhra government official.

APSFL is buying 5 million set-top boxes to add to the existing 1 million subscribers of its triple-play services, which include a TV channel, a fixed telephone line and broadband Internet, for a wider reach of the official TV channel. With that, ‘AP Fiber News’ will reach about half the homes in the state. This is apart from scrapping the collection of ‘pole tax’, a much-awaited relief sought by cable operators. While ‘AP Fiber News’ will be initially aired through APSFL’s FTH network, it is to be expanded by roping in other multi-system operators (MSOs) to beam it on their networks. It is mandatory for MSOs to air government channels. Progressively, APFSL is to get Direct-to-Home (DTH) networks also on board.
