Husker Posted December 3, 2021 Author Share Posted December 3, 2021 IOC holds second call with Peng Shuai as concern for tennis player continues The IOC held a second video call with Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai on Wednesday with a “personal meeting” agreed for January, CNN and The Washington Post report. In a statement released on Thursday, the IOC said Peng appeared “safe and well, given the difficult situation she is in.” The Women’s Tennis Association announced the suspension of its events in China on Wednesday, amid growing concern for Peng who not been seen in public for nearly a month. In a Thursday press briefing Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said, “We have always resolutely opposed the politicization of sports,” the Wall Street Journal reports. More on the situation: - On November 2, Peng accused a high-ranking Chinese official of sexual assault on her social media in posts that were subsequently deleted, CNN, The New York Times and The Guardian report. - IOC president Thomas Bach held a video call with Peng on November 21 that was highly scrutinized and dismissed by some as a publicity stunt, The New York Times reports. - In a December 1 statement WTA chairman Steve Simon said: “While we now know where Peng is, I have serious doubts that she is free, safe and not subject to censorship, coercion and intimidation.” - Beijing is set to host the Winter Olympics in February 2022. The current rules for foreign nationals entering Australia say they have to be vaccinated for COVID-19, or they have to have a valid medical exemption. The Australian Border Force does not necessarily accept that previously contracting COVID-19 – even in the past six months – qualifies as a valid exemption to not be vaccinated. Djokovic has previously expressed an anti-vaccination stance, so could Australian authorities really believe that the sole reason for him not being vaccinated is that he contracted COVID recently? Assume for a minute that you can’t get vaccinated within six months of contracting COVID-19. Djokovic first contracted the virus in June 2020, and there is now a strong suggestion he tested positive again at some point in the past six months.
