In unveiling its Galaxy Note 8 smartphone on Wednesday, Samsung sent a loud message that it's unwilling to let Apple dominate 2017 without a fight.

At an event in New York City on Wednesday, Samsung showcased what may be its most impressive smartphone yet. The Galaxy Note 8 takes all of the best features in the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, both of which debuted earlier this year, and adds some additional components that make the phone more attractive than its predecessors.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 comes with the same curved screen so many Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ owners (myself included) found so appealing and made it even bigger at 6.3 inches (from 6.2 inches in the Galaxy S8+). Samsung has also revamped the smartphone's design with slick lines and a futuristic feel popularized by its Galaxy S8 devices. Add that to its fast wireless charging, speedier performance from its new processors, and user-friendly operating system in Android Nougat, and the Galaxy Note 8 looks like a contender.

But it's the extras that may make it an even more attractive option this holiday season. It's the first Samsung smartphone to come with a dual-lens camera. And with its compatibility with the S Pen stylus, allowing users to draw and write on the screen, it's more versatile than most handsets available today including the Galaxy S8.

Next month, Apple is expected to unveil three new smartphones. Two of those, presumed to be the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus, are expected to include minor updates over last year's iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Both smartphones look decidedly "old school" compared to the Galaxy Note 8.

The third Apple phone this year, called the iPhone 8, if reports are accurate, may be the Galaxy Note 8's biggest rival. It's expected design mimics the Galaxy Note 8's, complete with a screen that almost entirely covers its face. With a rumored 5.8-inch screen, the iPhone 8 won't be much smaller than the gigantic Galaxy Note 8. Apple's iPhone 8 may also be the first from the company to come with wireless charging, which would eliminate the need to tether the smartphone to the wall to boost its charge.

Of course, this being Apple, there's a good chance that all three new iPhones will be hits and sell better than any other rival device. But based on objective criteria, shoppers may decide that Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 is superior to the iPhones in at least some critical areas.

Those who want a bigger display, for instance, will find it in the Galaxy Note 8. The S Pen stylus is a surprisingly handy accessory, and at just a shade under $1,000, there's reason to believe the Galaxy Note 8 will be less expensive than the iPhone 8, which is rumored to cost more than $1,000.

It's also worth noting that analysts and market watchers say Apple could have trouble producing enough iPhone 8s to meet the demand due to manufacturing difficulties. If that's true, some consumers who feel they need the latest and greatest device may opt for the readily available Galaxy Note 8 rather than wait for the iPhone 8.

However, Apple's iPhone will be superior to the Galaxy Note 8 in some respects. Apple's iOS operating system is better than Android, in my opinion (I also own an iPhone 7 Plus), and the iPhone maker's services integration that lets users access photos, music, and other content from a range of devices is outstanding.

But pitted against the Galaxy Note 8, Apple's pending iPhone may not be an obvious choice. Samsung has delivered some of its best features to the Galaxy Note 8, and it's done it all in a device that comes with one of the best designs ever.Don't ignore the Galaxy Note 8 just because it's not an iPhone. Samsung has unveiled an impressive new device that puts Apple on notice.

android-authority-YotaPhone-31-840x525.j

The Yota 3, also known as the YotaPhone 3, is now official. The latest device from Russian manufacturer Yota was announced at an event in Beijing, with details being posted on Yota’s VK page soon after.

The series is somewhat unique as far as Android smartphones are concerned thanks to its display setup. The Yota 3 comes with a 5.5-inch, Full HD, AMOLED display on the front, but also features a 5.2-inch E Ink display on the rear (the Yota 2‘s E Ink screen came in at 4.7 inches).

We don’t yet know the full range of features that this rear screen will offer, but we do know that it houses three capacitive buttons. Additionally, in China, the Yota 3 will come with several pre-installed apps dedicated to reading, as well as a library of modern and classic eBooks. It seems that this type of usage will, as you would expect, play a large role in how the rear screen is used.

The rear display is clearly the highlight of the device, as there’s nothing particularly exciting about the rest of the specs. The handset arrives with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, 4 GB of RAM, and 64 GB Or 128 GB Of internal storage space, depending on which model you pick up.

There’s a single camera on the rear with 13 MP dual tone LED flash, while a 12 MP snapper sits up front. The handset is powered by a 3,300 mAh battery with USB Type-C connectivity, includes a fingerprint scanner, and will launch running YotaOS 3.0 on top of Android 7.1.1 Nougat. For those wondering about an update to Android 8.0 Oreo, it could take a while for it to reach the Yota 3 — Yota hasn’t been exactly zippy with updates in the past.

Pre-orders for the 128 GB variant of the Yota 3 will launch on September 5 with Chinese retailer JD.com for around $465. This will be followed by the 64 GB variant pre-orders on September 18 for around $360, before the device is officially released in China soon after. These prices are, as was previously rumored, considerably lower than the price of the YotaPhone 2, which started at around $850 — something that should come as a good news to anyone interested in what the YotaPhone series has to offer but was previously put off by the price.

The handset will be going on sale in both Russian and in China, but whether it will launch in other territories hasn’t been confirmed. We’ll let you know as we learn more.

Leaked images of high-end Sony XZ1 leave little to the imagination

Sony-Xperia-Xz1_1.png

Sony’s IFA press conference will take place on August 31, when the company will announce the Xperia XZ1, among a few other devices. Last week, a CAD render video of the upcoming smartphone was released by OnLeaks. Now, what appear to be official press images of the handset have also popped up online, leaving little to the imagination.

Based on the images, the Xperia XZ1 will come in at least two color options: black and pink. In terms of design, the smartphone doesn’t offer anything new or exciting, as it kind of looks like a lot of other Xperia devices. It has quite large bezels on the top and bottom that make the device look a bit dated, especially when compared to the Samsung Galaxy S8, Essential Phone, and other bezel-less devices.

Although specs haven’t been confirmed yet, we have heard quite a few rumors on this topic so far. The Xperia XZ1 is said to arrive with a 5.2-inch Full HD display and should be powered by the Snapdragon 835 chipset. There’s only a single camera on the back that will reportedly sport a 19 MP sensor and could be capable of capturing both 4K and 960fps slow motion video.

Rumors also suggest the device will offer 4 GB of RAM, a 12 MP selfie snapper, a 3,000 mAh battery, dual front-facing speakers, and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. In terms of price, leaker Roland Quandt reports that the handset will set you back £599 in the UK, which translates to around $765. This definitely isn’t cheap, although the US price will likely be lower than the one in the UK, as it usually is.

Any thoughts on Sony’s upcoming XZ1 smartphone? Leave them down below.

Google's second-generation Pixel handsets, powered by Snapdragon 836 SoC's, will be unveiled on October 5th.

(Speaking of V30, apparently the quad DAC that was restricted to Asia in the G6 will be included globally this time around.)
