The South Central Railway (SCR), one of the major transportation modes for devotees for Krishna Pushkarams, has been operating 213 trains from various destinations to the city. As many as 13 lakh pilgrims travelled by the trains in the last two days, said SCR Krishna Pushkaram Officer on Special Duty (OSD) S. Ramesh Babu.

Addressing newsmen here on Monday, the OSD said Sunday (10{+t}{+h}day of Pushkarams) recorded the highest number and the SCR had operated five emergency trains to Visakhapatnam, Narsapur and Nellore. Two trains were extended up to Anakapalli and additional coaches were allotted to several trains. About 32,000 passengers travelled by trains between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. as per the data available from various ticket booking counters, he said. “In 2004 Krishna Pushkarams, 10 lakh pilgrims utilised the services of the SCR. In 2016 utsavams, 13 lakh devotees travelled by trains, and we expect the figure to cross 15 lakh by Tuesday [when the fete conclude]. The SCR has earned Rs. 1 crore revenue during the ongoing pushkarams,” Mr. Ramesh Babu said.

Satellite railway stations set up at Gunadala, Rayanapadu, Krishna Canal and Madhuranagar were helping regulate the pilgrim rush at the main station. About 20,000 devotees had been alighting at these stations every day, the OSD said. Staff from about 15 departments had been pressed into service for operating the emergency trains and extending some trains, Mr. Ramesh Babu said and complimented the security personnel for effective control on and off the platforms.
