Pitch conditions: The Rose Bowl in Southampton is under a heat wave and the curator has high standards to aspire to, considering the beauty of the Test match, his venue succeeds. However, one can have a fair idea about what this pitch holds. It will not, for sure, be as dead and buried as Trent Bridge turned out to be, definitely not after the referee, David Boon, dismissed its quality in his report. However, it will not be the green carpet that Lords offered either. In other words, batsman can expect a pitch that is browner and harder. There will be sufficient seam movement but, more importantly truer bounce, which should give England some confidence

KP writes, 'Alastair Cook is enduring an experience I would not wish on my worst enemy. He will not be able to sleep at night and when he eventually drifts off and wakes up in the morning the last and first things going through his mind will be worries over his career and his job.'

Pitch report: 'There has only been one Test match here. It was 2011 when Sri Lanka played England in a rain-affected match. The first thing that strikes you about this pitch is its comparison with Lord's. The grass is not fresh and green but it is denser. There will be good bounce and carry.'
