NTR_Sachin Posted January 21, 2014 Share Posted January 21, 2014 Thanks to its sustainable development initiatives, Hyderabad is among 34 cities in the reckoning for 'Most Lovable City' Hyderabad is one among the 34 cities in 14 countries that are vying for the tag of 'Most Lovable City'. The finalists were chosen by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) from among the 163 entrants for their role in sustainable development initiatives. In India, only three cities have made the cut. A World Wildlife Fund effort, the award tries to benchmark sustainability of the cities in terms of smarter transportation, cleaner energy, efficient buildings and less waste. The choice fell on Hyderabad because: "... is leading its country to more sustainable real estate through tax rebates, eco-building guidelines and energy auditing, and also Hyderabad municipality is also the first Indian city to create a 'Modiversity' wing - an administrative body to improve local flora and fauna." The other Indian cities in reckoning are Cochin and Coimbatore. While Coimbatore has been picked for its investment in technology and renewable energy, Cochin made the grade due to its applied innovation and lower carbon footprint. "We conducted stakeholder meetings, we pooled data and the data was analysed. On the basis of this data about transport facilities, parks, open spaces, use of electricity Hyderabad was shortlisted," informs Rakesh Kamal who conducted the city assessment in tandem with GHMC. "A jury will now review the actions and commitments reported by these cities and finally identify one sustainability leader per country for the National Earth Hour Capital Awards to be presented on March 27 in Canada," says Rakesh. The ranking will be done on the basis of online votes, photographs and ideas received for individual cities. The city that gets most of them will be declared the winner on March 27 for the Earth Hour City Challenge.
