Npower Posted October 27, 2011 Share Posted October 27, 2011 YSR Put Paid To Naidu�s Grand Plans To Bring Formula One Grand Prix To City Jinka Nagaraju TNN Hyderabad: Electoral politics ahead of the 2004 assembly elections in the state triggered an aggressive campaign by then Congress leader Y S Rajasekhara Reddy against the grand plans of the then chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu to bring the Indian leg of the Formula One Grand Prix race to Hyderabad. In the end, the TDP chief's dream was scuttled and instead of Hyderabad, it will be Greater Noida that would play host to the inaugural Indian leg of the F1 race on Oct 30. According to sources, after watching the Italian leg of the Grand Prix at the personal invitation of F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, Naidu convinced the F1 boss then and there that Hyderabad can host the Indian leg of the Grand Prix. Having successfully hosted the Asian athletics meet, the National Games and the Afro-Asian Games at the Gachibowli stadium on the city outskirts, Naidu viewed F1 racing as the next big leap forward to make Hyderabad a global city, said sources in the know-how. However, given the importance of the event, Maharashtra too made aggressive postures at bagging the coveted F1 race track. An attempt had been made in 1997 to host the event at Kolkata, and later, F1 teams had also scouted Chennai and Coimbatore as possible locations for the motor race track. However, all the earlier attempts failed and with Mumbai breathing down his back, Naidu did his best to bag the project Hyderabad's way. The TDP president offered 1,500 acres of land close to the proposed international airport at Shamshabad. Finally, in December 2003, a seven-year pre-agreement was signed to host the GP with the assurance that the race track to be constructed near Gopanapalli village in Ranga Reddy district would become operational by 2007 and that the project would generate about 10,000 local jobs. However, things began falling apart as the 2004 assembly elections neared. Congress leader YS Rajasekhara Reddy transformed the project into a powerful electoral tool in the backdrop of chronic drought and suicides by farmers to hit at Naidu and the F1 race track he was actively promoting. YSR took the campaign against the F1 race to such a height that he announced in the Assembly that the F1 race was for those who were suffering from indigestion caused by surfeit of eating. The left, which was in the company of Congress, also joined the chorus against the project. Naidu held discussion with companies like Mahindra, GVK and others to build hotels and other infrastructure in the vicinity of the proposed F1 track. But thanks to the elections, the cost of the project, which was estimated at Rs 10,000 crore and the prevailing drought situation, the F1 track became a political issue, said the sources. Naidu appointed a subcommittee headed by his finance minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu. The committee concluded that the project has become a politically sensitive issue and cautioned the state government against going ahead with the project. In the meantime, Naidu lost the assembly elections and YSR was sworn in as chief minister in May 2004. After assuming office, the new chief minister announced in the Assembly that Rs 10,000 crore was too big an amount to be spent on an entertainment event. The MoU signed between the state and the F1 organisers was cancelled by the YSR regime few months after it came to power. By 2007, a fresh lobbying began among states like Karnataka, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Finally Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh and in the vicinity of New Delhi, bagged the project. Now, the AP government officials feel that the state had lost a golden opportunity by calling off the event. According to them, the project would have given the hotel and tourism industry a great boost and increased the global stature of Hyderabad and the state as well. The situation our state was in due to a long drought season & on the other hand YSR was picking up momentum as a strong opposition leader as ever... CBN should have thought of implementing/ providing some public pleasing schemes or ideas. Instead he was travelling to Italy with the likes of Akkineni Nagarjuna etc... to meet Ecclestone. What majority of telugu people need is help & security in the form of schemes like Aarogyasri etc... not F1 race track & Asian athletics meets! If CBN had spent at least half of his innovative ideas to create that feeling that his rule was a "common man's government" among the public.. there wouldn't have been a YSR's rule. But I don't see it as a long time affair. Take examples as Gatchi bowli and other stadiums constructed during the national and afro-asian games. Entire infrastructure built then is now wearing off. Yes this is correct. Lack of development (may be not in the same pace) and awareness in rest of the states. Everyone is thinking about moving to Hyderabad for settlement or jobs or other reasons.CBN should have concentrated in other areas. He actually did when he asked state committee to review the chances of development of establishment of companies in other areas in state and I think they listed about 8 to 10 other places in the state.
