NEW YORK -- The National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) announced today a new All-Star Game format for NBA All-Star 2018 in Los Angeles.Β  This will mark the NBA’s first All-Star Game without a matchup between the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference.

Β

Under the revamped format, two captains will draft the 2018 All-Star teams from the pool of players voted as starters and reserves, making selections without regard for conference affiliation.Β  The captains will be the All-Star starter from each conference who receives the most fan votes in his conference.

Β

The 67th All-Star Game will be played at Staples Center on Sunday, Feb. 18 (8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT), with TNT televising the midseason classic for the 16th consecutive year.

Β

β€œI’m thrilled with what the players and the league have done to improve the All-Star Game, which has been a priority for all of us,” said NBPA President Chris Paul of the Houston Rockets.Β  β€œWe’re looking forward to putting on an entertaining show in L.A.”

Β

β€œWe’re excited about the new All-Star format and appreciate the players’ willingness to try something new,” said NBA President, League Operations Byron Spruell.

Β

In another new feature, the 2018 All-Star teams will play for charity.Β  Each team will select a Los Angeles-area charity or national organization where donations will be used to support local efforts.

Β

The process for selecting the 24 All-Stars will remain the same, with 12 players from each conference earning spots.Β  The 10 starters – two guards and three frontcourt players per conference – will continue to be chosen by a combination of fans (50 percent of the vote), current players (25 percent) and basketball media (25 percent).Β  The NBA’s head coaches will still select the 14 reserves, voting for two guards, three frontcourt players and two players at any position in their respective conferences.Β  Specific details about the draft will be announced at a later date.

Β

TNT will reveal the All-Star Game starters and captains on Thursday, Jan. 18 and unveil the reserves on Tuesday, Jan. 23.Β  NBA All-Star Voting 2018 presented by Verizon will tip off on Monday, Dec. 25 before five Christmas Day games across ESPN, ABC and TNT.

Β

The process for determining the 2018 All-Star Game head coaches is unchanged.Β  The head coaches whose teams clinch the best record in their respective conferences two weeks before the All-Star Game will earn the nod, though the Golden State Warriors' Steve Kerr and the Boston Celtics’ Brad Stevens are ineligible for the honor because they coached in the 2017 All-Star Game.Β  Each All-Star Game coach will lead the team that includes the captain from the same conference.

  • 2 weeks later...
The Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics are just hours away from the first game of the 2017-18 season (8 ET, TNT). That showdown will mark Kyrie Irving's first game back in Cleveland as a member of the Celtics, but according to Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com, his contributions to the Cavs won't soon be forgotten.

Β

The Cavs plan to play a video tribute to Irving's career during tonight's game that will touch on some of Irving's highest achievements with Cleveland:Β

  • Irving, the No. 1 overall pick by the Cavs in 2011 who made the game-winning 3-point shot in Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals, will play his first NBA game in another team's uniform when the Celtics take the court at The Q.
  • According to a team source, the video is a "thank you" to Irving intended to show appreciation for all he accomplished in six seasons here. The team has not decided when during the game to show the video.Β
  • Irving requested a trade from the Cavs in July and received it in August, when he was shipped to Boston for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, and two draft picks.
  • Irving has thanked Cleveland fans for their support during his six seasons here, but has also made less-than-flattering comparisons to the city, the Cavs' organization, and to LeBron James.
  • Irving's latest last week was he said Boston was a "real, live sports city." The context of his comments made them seem to most like he was suggesting Cleveland was not those things.
Asked how Irving should be received on Tuesday, Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said: "We've got the best fans in the world and they're going to do whatever the see best.

...

"Whatever decision they make, that's the right one," Lue said. "Because they've been behind us for three straight years, since I've been here, they've always made the right decisions. So whatever they decide to do, I embrace whatever they do."

Β

J.R. Smith said Irving "was a great player when he was here.

Β

"In my eyes he was a good teammate and he helped us win a championship, so I think it will be good," Smith said.
