Both players broke in the top 20 in the list of global personalities from all genres. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo |Photo Credit: AP Cristiano Ronaldo has been in the headlines as well as amongst major accolades in the recent past, having beaten Lionel Messi to win the last two Ballon d'Or awards (2016 and 2017), but also his team Barcelona by winning three back-to-back Champions League titles with Real Madrid. In another achievement, the Portuguese has been ranked higher than the Argentine in the list of most admired personalities by YouGov. In the admiration rankings of celebrities all around the globe, Ronaldo has been ranked at No. 10 while Messi comes just one place behind at No. 11. David Beckham is the only other sports personality in the top 20, fetching 13th position in the list. The YouGov rankings were calculated based on a combination of responses to two questions in principle. (1) Whether a respondent admires a specific personality or not, and (2) whether the respondent admires that specific personality the most or not. After helping Portugal reach the Round of 16 of the recently concluded 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Ronaldo sought a transfer from Real Madrid to Juventus in a whopping EUR 100 million move. Messi, on the other hand, was as productive in front of the goal (one goal) as was Ronaldo (4 goals) but the former also played a crucial goal in helping his team Argentina reach the Round of 16 where they were beaten by eventual winners France. Presently 33 years old, Ronaldo is one of the top favourites to clinch the FIFA Men's Best player award alongside his arch-rival Lionel Messi, who was also named in the 10-man shortlist recently released by FIFA. In terms of the most loved sports personalities in India, MS Dhoni has been ranked at No. 2 spot in the list of most admired people in the country.
