The Aam Aadmi Party, which recently formed the government in Delhi and has won huge public support for its anti-corruption stand, is now tackling allegations that its Law Minister, Somnath Bharti, tried to influence a witness and tamper with evidence in a case he handled last year.

In August last year, Mr Bharti and his client were fighting a corruption case in a CBI court in Delhi when the judge said their conduct is "not only highly objectionable, unethical, but also amounts to tampering with evidence."

Somnath Bharthi evaded questions on whether, as a defence counsel, it was unethical for him to contact a prosecution witness.

Mr Kejriwal stood by his minister, calling the court observation "completely wrong."

NEW DELHI: Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti, indicted by a court for "tampering of evidence" in a case he appeared as a defence lawyer, has informed the Bar Council of Delhi that he intends to surrender his licence to practice law.

Murari Tiwari, the secretary of Bar Council of Delhi (BCD), confirmed that Bharti's application was received on Friday evening and the lawyer's body has asked for his enrolment certificate which is issued when a person is granted the licence to practice law.

"Right now, by way of his application received last evening, he has informed us that he intends to surrender his licence. The process would be complete when he hands over his enrolment certificate, which we have asked for. As soon as his enrolment certificate is received, his licence would be put in a suspended state," Tiwari said.

Somnath Bharti's midnight raid: African woman forced to urinate in public

The women, mostly Ugandans and Nigerians, said they were assaulted by "people not in uniform" while a member of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) charged the minister with making "racist remarks" against the Africans.

One of the women, who called herself Sandra, a student, narrated the Thursday night incident: "We were in our house when suddenly we heard people shouting outside.

"When we peeped out, we saw a huge crowd. We got scared and locked ourselves inside," Sandra, 24, pursuing a course from the Indira Gandhi National Open University, added.

Her friend, Selvia, 23, who has come for medical treatment, said: "They hurled abuses and insulted us."

Both of them said the police came and told them to come out of their rooms. "We were taken to the hospital and later allowed to return home," Sandra said.

"We thought the crowd will kill us. We were very scared," she added.

Midnight raid: Delhi court directs police to file FIR against Somnath Bharti

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Sunday asked the police to file an FIR against law ministerSomnath Bharti and others after the Ugandan women lodged a complaint with the metropolitan magistrate.

The court has passed order under section 156 (3) CrPC to file an FIR.

Earlier, embarrassed over the treatment of a group of Africans by Delhi law minister SomnathBharti at Khirki Extension, the foreign office called in over 20 African envoys on Saturday evening to assure them that the Indian government would take action regarding Thursday's incident. A single-point office of the police commissioner will now be established, specifically for complaints from foreigners.
