Hyderabad: When the Jawarharlal Nehru-led Union government with Sardar Vallabhai Patel as its Home minister, decided to go for army action on Hyderabad a few weeks before September 17, 1948, Congressman K.M. Munshi was in the city to gather some useful information for the government.

And 65 years later in 2013, the President of India arrives in Hyderabad and parties scramble to get an appointment with him to represent their case on the contentious state bifurcation.

Whether the President has had an opinion on the subject already, or whether these meetings will shape his future course on the issue remains a moot question.

The significance of Pranab Mukherjee’s role in the process is by now very clear. If and when a state bifurcation Bill is tabled in the Parliament, it becomes a property of the Parliament. Parliament of India consists of – the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha and the President of India.

Soon after his arrival in Hyderabad, the President went on to meet leaders of Congress and TDP. Seemandhra TDP leaders and Telangana congress leaders met him and put their cases. The TDP leaders requested Pranab to keep the state undivided, “if providing equal justice to both the regions is not possible”. The TDP leaders explained to him how the UPA government is proceeding on the issue in a “unilateral manner”.

It was then the turn of Telangana Congress leaders to explain Pranab various issues involved in taking forward the bifurcation process.

YSRCP chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy led a delegation of party leaders to the President and after the meeting, Jagan left without speaking to the waiting media persons.

Party leaders M.V. Mysoora Reddy and D.A.Somayajulu told reporters that their party is not for division of the state and prayed the President to take a decision that is in tune with the Constitution of India.

Former Chief Minister N.T. Ramarao’s widow Lakshmi Parvathi told reports after meeting Pranab that it is only the President who can stop the outrageous bifurcation of the state.

Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy also met Pranab soon after his arrival at the Raj Bhavan and discussed a range of issues with the President.

President Pranab arrived in Hyderabad at 7.30 PM. He will be the chief guest at the passing out parade of IPS freshers at the Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Police Academy on Tuesday. Pranab was welcomed at the begumpet airport by Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan, CM Kiran, Deputy Chief Minister D. Rajanarasimha and other leaders.

Meanwhile, the task force appointed by the Union Home ministry with the Advisor to the Union Home ministry K. Vijay Kumar as chairman, is likely to submit its report to the Home ministry on Tuesday. It may also be recalled that the last date for parties to furnish a reply to the Home Ministry’s letter is November 5.

According to reports in a section of media, the task force has had actually no specific brief regarding their task in Hyderabad and the Task force did not speak anything about bifurcation with the former and serving police officers when the Task force came on a three-day visit to the state capital last week.
