malik
the hindu report First things first! All ye detractors of director Krishna Vamsi and actor NTR Junior, it's time you gulped down your words. The duo comes back with a vengeance and yes, one of the most powerful films made in Telugu in many years. `Rakhi' is one of the compelling films, as compelling as it can get, made in Telugu. NTR Junior breathes fire. He elevates the film with the most sensitive yet volatile performance of his career. Set against the typical railway middle-class colony and shot on location in Lalaguda Railway quarters the film exposes the "insensitive system and the cultureless society of ours" where abuse of women is as common as sunrise. Husbands killing wives, fathers abusing daughters, teachers eyeing girl students, doctors groping patients, spurned lovers killing girls in examination halls and those millions and millions of preying eyes on the streets that disrobe women the moment they step out of home, `Rakhi' digs out the real stories. Ramakrishna alias Rakhi dotes on his sister. His aim is to join , the Indian Railways. His sister's greedy husband and in-laws burn her alive after getting another alliance with a hefty dowry. In her blazing pyre, Rakhi sees the angst of thousands of sisters reduced to ashes. Corrupt cops and conniving lawyers give the case a silent burial in court. And Rakhi explodes. How he avenges the death of his `sisters' has to be seen on the screen. Backed by powerful dialogues, NTR Junior as the tormented brother taking on the system is the backbone of the film. Illeana, as his ladylove, comes out with a matured performance and so do Charmee, Chandra Mohan and Kota Srinivasa Rao. Devisri Prasad gives a peppy score. As much as it is NTR Junior's film, it is Krishna Vamsi's best too despite a wee bit sermonising climax. K.V.S. Madhav
