HYDERABAD: From thick friends to bitter foes, the relationship between Telugu Desam and the CPI(M) might have soured, but there was a time when none other than the towering Marxist ideologue, Puchalapalli Sundarayya, was bowled over by NTR's crowd-pulling techniques.

"It was in the year 1982 when NTR just announced the formation of a new party. We were in the old Assembly hall when we heard some commotion outside. We came out to see what was happening. We were struck by the crowds. It was a vast stretch of humanity that followed NTR's Ratham," Telugu Desam Party MLA, Ch. Rajeswara Rao reminisced while speaking at a meeting organised by the party on the tenth death anniversary of NTR on Wednesday.

`His destiny'

Mr. Rao who was the leader of the CPI group at that time said he was accompanying the Marxist leader and veteran Socialist, Gouthu Latchanna. Three of them stood there amazed and Mr. Sundarayya's poser to Mr. Latchanna was, "We have been in public life for over 50 years now. He (NTR) has entered politics just the other day but has attracted such large crowds. What could be the reason?" Mr. Latchanna's one-liner was, "It is his time and destiny."

Strong altenative

Mr. Rao said he had the courage to tell the senior leaders that Communists and other Opposition parties have not worked towards developing a strong political alternative to Congress which was on the decline. They did not make any comment. "NTR was successful in coming up with one not only in the State but the entire country. We need a new political thinking that is in tune with people's changing aspirations. NTR'sideology was reflected in the line he kept repeating, `society is my temple and the poor people my gods,'" he added.
