Trademark Gogula-Nothing New

Rating: ***.25 (***** Very Good, **** Good, *** Fair, ** Average, * Bad)

Pawan Kalyan and AsinOne of the first hits this year was Lakshmi which had an added asset-Ramana Gogula's unique music. After the dismal performance of his last release Bangaram at the box-office, Pawan Kalyan is back with Annavaram. This combi has worked out before-Thammudu and Badri became huge successes. Jhonny was their last movie, whose music sales went better than the movie ticket sales. This album is good for Gogula, he doesn't really give sub-standard music ever, especially for pal Pawan's flick. Time will tell whether Annavaram will go the Badri way or chose the Jhonny route.

Rakshasa Rajyam Composer/Singer Shankar Mahadevan is a favorite with Telugu composers. Rakshasa Rajyam is a racy, fast-paced song with Mahadevan's trademark 'breathless' voice. It starts on a fast note, and ends in even faster and louder drum beats picking up towards the end. It's not really hummable, but it might look good onscreen. ***.25

Lussia Okay, this song starts off sounding really similar to Dhaga Dhaga in 'Lakshmi'. Anyways, Gogula's good at things like 'Chikita', 'Missamma', 'Satyabhama' and other words you find only in his songs. 'Lussia' is one such. It takes three hearings to understand each word in the lyrics distinctly due to Gogula's wheezy voice. It goes something like 'Akasam neeru nippu nela ee gali...namundu chetulu katti dandam pettali...'-can you picture the bratty lead actor here or not? An enjoyable number. ***.5

Mehabooba Tippu's voice is preferred for numbers such as this. Mehabooba is a pacy and smooth dance number. It has slow interludes sometimes, followed by disco beats. It is a mix of many different music themes-Disco, Telugu folk, romance and message-oriented. Not bad. ***

Pawan KalyanNeevalle Neevalle Whew! Finally, a female voice. When I just started to think that Annavaram probably doesn't feature Asin mouthing any words in the songs, and is forced to keep mum, Neevalle starts off. Romantic, pining for the partner kind of a song. Kalyani manages pretty well herself when Tippu joins her to make a soft and simple duet. ***

Annayya Annavante This season will see an overdose of sibling sentiment. After Rakhee, Annavaram has a sister-sentiment song in it. The usual-he'll do anything for his lovely li'l sis, anything to make her happy and even his life is no big deal for that purpose. Mano and Ganga lend their voices for this song, and make a good job of it. A happy number-and an all-out sibling song. (Listen to 'Rakhee Rakhee naa Kawasaki' in Rakhee and you will see the irony of the situation). ***.25

Last Word Annavaram is not bad, but nothing great either. That seems to be the case with many of the albums releasing these days. It has music that doesn't really try to impress-it's just meant to be a part of the entire picture, a support and not an elevation. 'Lussia' and 'Mehbooba' will be liked, but nothing you will fall in love with. The music is not outstanding, just usual Gogula.
