Colorful Rakhee Shimmers For The Season

Rating: ***.5 (***** Very Good, **** Good, *** Fair, ** Average, * Bad)

Charmme and NTR'Rakhee' has Devisri Prasad slowly getting back to his erstwhile form. This album has some good numbers but nothing mind-blowing, still the songs grow on you. NTR is banking on this movie immensely, and the songs are not disappointing, although, nothing out of the world. As it is in Telugu cinema, the fate of the movie and its music are intertwined. Let's just wait and watch, but for now, the music is not bad.

Rangu Rabba Rabba 'Rangu Rabba Rabba Antundi Rangu Barse..' This Holi song is full of energy and Devisri just got back his enthusiasm and erstwhile rigor which hibernated for a while. Amalraj and Priya lend their voices to this song definitely set in a riot of colors-and suits it nicely. Oh, and there's a rap interlude (how was it in the good old days without English lyrics, rap and hip hop in between Telugu songs?). ***.5

Zara Zara Andrea renders this sensual number. Her voice is cool and floats along this song which has some Arabian music influencing it and even playing for a bit in the interlude. A good number that grows on you. ***.5

Vastava Vastava One of those playful, rustic and earthy numbers that is tailor made for NTR. Jassie Gift, Srilekha and Parthasarathi give their voices to this song that is sure to wake up the masses. Nothing fresh or unique, another one of those dance numbers, but one which still makes for good hearing while it lasts. ***.25

Ileana and NTR Rakhee Rakhee Surprisingly, this is not a slow, mournful song doused in sibling sentimentality. In fact, it seems to have little to do with the 'Rakhee' that we associate it with except for the chorus that comes up in the beginning and in between to recite its importance in three brief lines after which the song starts off with an energetic 'Rakhee Rakhee Rakhee Naa Kawasaki'. Got the picture? It's just another duet which starts off making little sense, but on repeated hearings it turns out that the writer wants to say something after all, but that's not important-it's just another number to listen to and tap your feet, and forget promptly. Devisri and Mamata's husky and unusual voices make it for enjoyable hearing though. ***.25

Kallallo Kaalagni SP Balasubrahmanyam renders this intense song with much gusto which talks about good and evil, accompanied by frenzied drum beats. If the grapevine is to be believed then Rakhee is about dowry, and this song is about the power of a woman and about waging a war against the system. A power-packed and inspiring number, similar to 'Nenu Saitham Agni Nethram' from Tagore and 'Agni Skalana' from Chatrapati. ***.5

Ninnu Chooste The list of 500 things about what happens when a couple sees each other is Ninnu Chooste. It's light and casual, and Shankar Mahadevan and Gopika Poornima lend their voices to this dance number. ***.25

Last Word Both director Krishna Vamsee and NTR are banking highly on this movie. The music is such that one won't be pressing the forward button on any of the songs. All the songs are worth listening to while they last. Devisri's music doesn't disappoint.
