1. Darmian showed his versatility

With Luke Shaw out long-term following the leg break he suffered in Eindhoven and Marcos Rojo sidelined with a hamstring injury, Louis van Gaal has few options on the left side of defence.

Matteo Darmian, who has been so impressive at right-back this season, showed his versatility by switching to left-back and playing with some merit there, frequently getting forward and defending with his usual diligence and composure.

2. Martial is a danger every time he gets the ball

With four goals in as many games since making his United debut, Sunderland needed to pay particular attention to the £36millon striker, whose quick feet and movement yielded three free-kicks inside the first 20 minutes. Whenever he was in possession in a dangerous area, panic spread through Sunderland's players, who resorted to crude measures to thwart him.

Martial turned provider for Wayne Rooney immediately after the break, cutting the ball back for his skipper to bundle the ball in at the near post. Memphis should have scored his second, and United's third, when Martial unselfishly fed the ball to him with 23 minutes left, but the Dutchman couldn't find the net.

Despite not scoring, this was arguably Matial's best game for United.

3. Blind's passing is a huge asset

Daley Blind served notice of his impressive passing range with his sublime ball for Robin van Persie's memorable diving header for Holland against Spain at last year's World Cup in Brazil. The United defender was at it again in midweek, providing a pin-point delivery for Wayne Rooney to open the scoring in the 3-0 Capital One Cup tie win over Ipswich, and again here, clipping the ball forward for Juan Mata to set up Memphis for the opener.

Blind's accuracy from long-range has the ability to open up defences and is proving an effective weapon for van Gaal's side this season.

4. United must improve their final ball

Until the opener from Memphis, United had been guilty of some wretched final balls, including crosses, corners and free-kicks that failed to beat the first man.

Among the culprits were Antonio Valencia and Juan Mata, and the final delivery is certainly an area Van Gaal and his players must improve on, given ho many times they found themselves in dangerous positions, only to squander the openings because of sloppy final balls.
