They frame their own rules of transacting business. The practice of having long vacations started during the colonial period. The judges (who were mostly British) loathed working in the excruciating summer conditions of India. Thus they stayed home for several weeks during the summer. This legacy was carried forward by the higher courts of independent India. Several Chief Justices and Law Commissions have proposed reduction in the number of holidays of the courts, but they were all met with strong opposition from the judges and the bar associations.
