Today marks the death anniversary of Tollywood legend Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, who passed away on January 18, 1996. He was born on May 28, 1923, in Nimmakuru, a small village in Gudivada taluk of Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh. He is popularly known as Sr NTR, cited as Viswa Vikhyatha Nata Sarvabhouma had a remarkable contribution to the Indian cinema. NTR, who ruled Telugu film industry and hearts of millions of fans, is among one of the most celebrated actors, with a career spanning over 45 years. He is best remembered for starring in a massive number of successful movies.

In 1949, NTR made his debut with the film Mana Desam. He has been a part of 300 films in various languages. He was not only a gifted actor but also enjoyed quite a reputation as a director, producer, scriptwriter and politician. As a director, his credits include Seetharama Kalyanam, Gulebakavali Katha, Sri Krishna Pandaveeyam, Ummadi Kutumbam, Kodalu Diddina Kapuram, Tatamma Kala, Daana Veera Soora Karna, Sri Rama Pattabhishekam, Sri Madvirata Parvam, Srimadvirat Veerabrahmendra Swami Charitra, Brahmashri Vishwamitra and Samrat Ashoka.

The late legendary actor was awarded Padma Shri which is India's fourth-highest civilian honour. He won the National Film Award thrice for producing Thodu Dongalu and Seetharama Kalyanam in the category of Certificate of Merit for Best Feature Film in Telugu and, for helming Varakatnam in the category of National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. He received the Filmfare Award for Best Telugu Actor for Badi Panthulu (1972). He also won Nandi Award for Best Actor for Kodalu Diddina Kapuram (1970) and Rashtrapati Award for Raju Peda and Lava Kusa in Best Actor category.

NTR had a keen interest in politics and later established a political party Telugu Desam and was served as Chief Minister of united Andhra Pradesh. His achievements in three fields, namely films, philanthropy, and politics, were remarkable. His last appearance on screen was in Srinatha Kavi Sarvabhowmudu (1993).
