State tops in solar capacity at 1867 MW

Kurnool, April 28:

The world' largest single location solar park of 1000 mega watts (one giga watt) coming up at Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh is nearing completion.

With 900 MW of the 1000 MW already commissioned at the Kurnool Ultra Solar Park, and the rest to be fully operational by May, it has already become the largest such park outpacing 648 mw solar park developed by Adani in Tamil Nadu and Topaz Solar Park of 550 mw in California.

Taking us through the project site located about 280 km from Hyderabad, Ajay Jain, Principal Secretary, Energy, said this is a major achievement and all of the one GW is expected to be completed by next month end.

The park has been developed under the solar parks scheme of MNRE and set up by Andhra Pradesh Solar Power Coporation, a joint venture company where in 50 per cent equity is held by SECI, 41 per cent by AP Genco and 9 per cent by Nredcap.

About Rs. 7,000 crore has been invested in the park by developers and the Government.

Of the 1000 MW, 500 MW has been implemented by Greenko which had acquired the assets of bankrupt company Sun Edison, 350 MW by Softbank Energy both at Rs. 4.63 per kWh, Azure Power 100 MW and Adani 50 MW, the latter two at Rs. 5.13 per unit with domestic content. The project also get bundled with NTPC thermal project bringing the tariffs down to Rs. 4 a unit, G Adiseshu, MD of APSPCL, said.

The solar park is spread over 5,811 acres. The plant packs about 40 lakh modules.

The centre has allotted Rs. 200 crore to the State to develop the park infrastructure.

The State has initiated three other solar parks at Ananthapuram I and II (500 mw each), and Kadapa Ultra Solar Park of 1000 mw.

With the commissioning of the solar park the installed capacity has gone up to 1867 mw in AP, making it the state with highest generation capacity outpacing Rajasthan (1812 mw), Jain said.

The State now has 6052 mw of installed renewable projects.

With the drastic drop in solar process and big capacity addition, the state plans to stagger solar project implementation and put on hold coal projects in pipeline.

Kurnool Solar Park to be ready by end of May

Kurnool: The world's largest solar power park -- the Kurnool Ultra Mega Solar Park -- with an installed capacity of 1000 MW will be ready by end of May near Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh. "Already, 900 MW capacity has been commissioned while the balance 100 MW will be commissioned by May end," AP principal secretary (energy and infrastructure) Ajay Jain told reporters during a field visit here today.

"Right now, we are generating 1867.23 MW of solar power, which is the highest in the country. Rajasthan is second with 1812 MW capacity, followed by Telangana (1287 MW) and Gujarat (1250 MW). Our target is to produce 10,000 MW of solar power by the year 2022," Jain said. Prior to the commissioning of the Kurnool Solar Park, the Kamuthi plant in Tamil Nadu had the largest installed solar capacity of 648 MW and Topaz Solar Farm in California 550 MW. The Kurnool Park has come up on an area of 5,811 acres at total cost of one billion USD with Greenko (500 MW), Soft Bank Energy (350 MW), Azure Power (100 MW) and Prayatna Developers (Adani group) (50 MW) as the joint developers. The park will produce 2,600 million units of power per annum, according to Jain.

The Government of India has granted Rs 200 crore for the project, he added. AP, the principal secretary said, now produced 6052 MW of power from non-conventional sources, including 3600 MW from wind. "We are ranked fifth in the country in wind power generation and plan to upgrade the capacity to 8000 MW by 2022. AP will be contributing 10 per cent of wind and solar energy out of the Centre's target of 175 GW by 2022," Jain said. AP Solar Power Corporation, managing director, G Adiseshu, Southern Power Distribution Company Chairman H Y Dora and other top officials were present.

With a capacity of 1,000 MW, Kurnool Ultra Solar Park has already outpaced the 648 MW facility developed by the Adani group in TN

With more than 900 MW of the 1,000 MW already commissioned, and the rest expected to be ready soon, the Kurnool Ultra Solar Park has become the largest single location solar project.

With a capacity of 1,000 MW, it has already outpaced the 648 MW solar park developed by the Adani group in Tamil Nadu and the 550 MW Topaz Solar Park in California.

The project is located about 280 km from Hyderabad and is developed under the Ministry of Renewable Energy’s Solar Parks scheme. The park has been set up by the Andhra Pradesh Solar Power Corporation Limited (APSPCL), a joint venture company where in 50 per cent equity is held by Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), 41 per cent by AP Genco and 9 per cent by Non-conventional Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP).

Ajay Jain, Principal Secretary Energy, Andhra Pradesh, told BusinessLine that nearly ₹7,000 crore has been invested on the Kurnool park. Developers such as Greenko (earlier Sun Edison) (500 MW), Softbank Group (350 MW), Azure Power (100 mw) and Adani (50 mw) have together invested around ₹6,000 crore, while around ₹1,000 crore has been put in by the State Government.

The 5,811-acre site has more than 40 lakh panels with a wiring network over 4,000 km long. In comparison, the site is little more than the Hyderabad international airport (5500 acre).

As regarding the price of solar energy, the developers had contracted for supplying at ₹4.63 per unit, and two developers Azure and Adani will be supplying at ₹5.13 per unit.

However, with the project getting bundled with the NTPC thermal project, the overall cost works out to about ₹4 per unit.

According to the experts, the power generated from the solar park is enough to meet about 80 per cent of the total power requirement of Kurnool district.
