Unsung Buddhist Hills of Cisterns at Thotlakonda

 

 

Many know Thotlakonda beach to be a great silent weekend getaway. The spot speaks of serenity and mystique. In the midst of oceanic revel, most tourists forget to pay attention to one of the most important monument found in the region. Thotlakonda was once a treasured Buddhist heritage site. There are evidences left still, that speak about unspoken and unsung Buddhist legacy that existed in Andhra.

Thotlakonda, located near Mangamaripeta about 15 kilometres away from Visakhapatnam on the way to Bheemunipatnam flaunts one of the rich Buddhist sites in the state.

Cisterns that speak historic reminiscence

There are 9 cisterns cut into the rock of the hill, giving birth to the name Thotlakonda, Hill of cisterns. The excavations that were conducted on the site brought to light a monastic complex comprising of a Maha Stupa, Votive Stupas, Silamandapa, Viharas and stone pathways. Many ancient coins belonging to Roman and Satavahana period, Brahmi label inscriptions, fragments of stone railing miniature stupas and sculptural panels depicting Buddha Padas were recovered.

Shreds of red ware, going back to the timeline between 3^rd Century BC to 3^rd Century AD were also recovered from this site. This Buddhist site is one of the very few in the country that commands a panoramic view of Bay of Bengal.

Remarkable Features of the Buddhist Site at Thotlakonda

One of the troughs on the hill top have been noted to still hold water. These troughs are said to never run dry across the seasons.

Evidence of maritime trade is seen with the old refractory of Himayana culture. It is said that Buddhist monks from far east countries used to come here often via sea and stayed for months and years to finish their studies at length on Buddhism.

The well know eagle shaped hill top in the region gives out beautiful and expansive view of the sea. This spot actually indicates a possibility of being the once great meditation destination for monks.

Nearby proximity with other great Buddhist sites in Sankaram and Bavikonda prove that Vizag was one of the most prominent Buddhist destinations in the world, back in the history.

అమరావతి ఆగస్టు 10 (ఆంధ్రజ్యోతి): విశాఖ సాగర తీరంలో మహాబోధి బుద్ధ విహార కేంద్రం ఏర్పాటుకు సహకరించాలని బౌద్ధ భిక్షువులు ముఖ్యమంత్రి చంద్రబాబునాయుడును కోరారు. బుద్ధ విహార కేంద్రం ప్రతినిధులతో కలిసి వారు సీఎంను ఆయన కార్యాలయంలో బుధవారం కలిశారు. విశాఖ సమీపంలోని భీమిలి తొట్లకొండలో ఏర్పాటు చేయబోయే మహాబోధి బుద్ధ విహార కేంద్రంపైౖ ప్రెజెంటేషన ఇచ్చారు. దీనిలో భాగంగా స్థూపం, ఆడిటోరియం, సమావేశ మందిరం, బుద్ధిజం, పరిశోధనా కేంద్రం ఏర్పాటు చేస్తున్నామని సీఎంకు వివరించారు. ఆంధ్రప్రదేశలో ‘బౌద్ధం’ అనే అంశంపై ప్రదర్శనశాల ఏర్పాటు చేస్తున్నామని కూడా తెలిపారు. ఈ అంశంపై పరిశీలించి త్వరలోనే ప్రభుత్వం నుంచి సహకారం అందిస్తామని ముఖ్యమంత్రి వారికి హామీ ఇచ్చారు. త్రిపీఠకాలు పేరిట తెలుగులో రూపొందించిన బౌద్ధ సాహిత్య గ్రంథాన్ని వారు ముఖ్యమంత్రికి బహూకరించారు.

Thotlakonda beach awaits inauguration in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam: Vizagties are disappointed once again as Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has been delaying to inaugurate the newly developed Thotlakonda beach, which is added in Vizag nearly two decades after the the existing beaches.

The beach visitors in Vizag city have been waiting for the inauguration of the beach as the Rushikona beach suffered heavy damage due to swell waves.  

The tourism department has developed the Thotlakonda beach with around Rs 2.5 crore and it has a park with sprawling lawns and landscape, four food courts with spacious dinning space, washrooms for men and women, toilets apart from a beautifully laid park and a sit-out.  

Recently, district collector Pravin Kumar visited the Thotlakonda beach and said that it can be opened anytime. Sources said that the officials have planned to get it inaugurated by the Chief Minister. But, the fresh visit of Mr Naidu to Vizag city on Wednesday has not fulfilled the beach visitors’ desire as he was confined to BRICS summit.  

Expressing displeasure over the delay in inauguration of the Thotlako-nda beach, Ganesh G, a software engineer, says that if the Chief Minister has no time to inaugurate it, the officials have to invite another VIP to do it. The Rushikonda beach was closed for tourists due to erosion. Though the tourism officials have planned to promote Vizag as a city of beaches and hills, it failed to attract visitors due to delay in the projects, he pointed out.  

Mr Naidu inaugurated the VUDA Central Park, but he has no time to inaugurate the beach. It clearly reflects that the TD leaders in Vizag city have been misleading Mr Naidu, says Kalyan Kumar, a resident of Sagarnagar area in the city.

Sources in the tourism department said that Mr Naidu may inaugurate the beach in his next visit to Vizag.

ఈ నేపథ్యంలో పర్యాటకశాఖ అధికారులు, జిల్లా అధికారులు తొట్లకొండలో ఉన్న సుమారు 25 ఎకరాల ప్రభుత్వ స్థలాన్ని ట్రస్ట్‌ సభ్యులకు ఇటీవల చూపించారు. ఇప్పటికే బౌద్ధ ఆరామాలున్న పవిత్ర ప్రాంతంగా తొట్లకొండకు గుర్తింపు ఉండడంతో ట్రస్ట్‌ సభ్యులు కూడా ఆ స్థలాన్ని లీజుకు తీసుకోవడానికి వెంటనే అంగీకరించారు.
