Nashik soaked as 991 mm rainfall in 9 hrs pounds district

Incessant rains lashed Nashik district in North Maharashtra with 991 mm rainfall being recorded in just nine hours today, triggering flood in Godavari river and severely affecting normal life.

In Old Nashik area, two persons were injured when wall of their old house collapsed due to heavy rains in afternoon.

The rains have been lashing Nashik since last morning.

The meteorological department has predicted heavy showers in next 24 hours.

In another incident today, ten people trapped inside a slum due to flood in Panchvati area were rescued in time.

"991.2 mm rainfall was recorded today between 8 AM and 5 PM in the district, with Nashik city recording 132.4 mm, Igatpuri 124 mm, Dindori 110 mm, Trimbakeshwar 160 mm, Peth 82 mm, Sinnar 66 mm, Kalwan 75 mm, Niphad 49.2 mm, Chandvad 15 mm, Yeola 10 mm, Nandgaon 18 mm, Baglan 23 mm, Devla 37 mm," according to district Collector Office.

Meanwhile, three cars parked on the banks of Godavari river in the city were swept away in flood, police said, adding that nobody was inside the cars when the mishap occurred.

With the incessant rains in last 24 hours, Gangapur dam (with 5630 mcft capacity), the main source of drinking water for the city, is now filled 23 per cent.

With Godavari river in spate, historic "Ramkund", which had dried up in May due to drought, started overflowing.

In the city, water-logging was witnessed in many low-lying areas.

As per an official statement, people living by riverside in Nashik have been asked to move to safer places.

In Untwadi area of city, water level of Nasardi river rose, affecting vehicular traffic.

Additional police and fire brigade personnel are deployed on the banks of the river as a precautionary measure.

The disaster management machinery is on the standby even as control rooms at various talukas were asked to function round-the-clock.
