After nearly six decades in service, India’s majestic aircraft carrier INS Viraat will set sail for the last time from Mumbai to Kochi this week, powered by its own boilers before it is decommissioned.

Once the ship berths itself with the Southern Naval Command on July 27 after sailing out from Mumbai on July 23, all valuable equipment on board like engines, radars, guns will be dismantled to prepare it for the decommissioning. The ship will then be towed back to Mumbai where it will be decommissioned.

However, it is still not clear what will happen to the ship, which was India’s sole aircraft carrier for over a decade once it is decommissioned. Though there is a proposal to develop it into an adventure tourism centre or a museum, no decision has so far been taken by the Defence Ministry.

Military experts and enthusiasts hope that Viraat will not go the way INS Vikrant did. The ship, which took part the 1971 war, was sold as a scrap and disposed of shocking many. Viraat had first served British Navy for over 30 Years before being bought by India. Viraat was originally commissioned by British Royal Navy as HMS Hermes on November 18, 1959.

It served as the flagship of Royal Navy’s task force during the Falkland Islands campaign in 1982 and was decommissioned from active duty in 1985. It was inducted into Indian Navy in 1987 after undergoing extensive refits.

A precursor to the world’s oldest operating aircraft carrier was the de-induction of its aircraft fleet of Sea Harriers in May this year.

On May 6 this year, Sea Harriers fighter aircraft flew for the last time from the flying deck of INS Viraat and two days later, the fleet was given a farewell at INS Hansa in Goa. Sea Harriers were an integral part of INS Viraat as well as INS Vikrant.

Tourism activities like sea sports, yachting, sailing, gliding and cruising will also be made available on the warship. A fivestar luxury hotel with about 1,500 rooms is also part of the plan. Heli-tourism will also be encouraged. But then it would cost some 700 Crore to the state which the cash strapped state could not afford such huge amount.

INS Viraat Coming to Bheemili Beach

Recently Retired INS Viraat is finally coming to Andhra Pradesh. Viraat is currently in Kochi where all the valuable equipment on board like engines, radars, guns will be dismantled to prepare it for the decommissioning. Defence Ministry has agreed to give it to AP where it will be turning into a tourist spot.

The Ship will be stationed at Bheemili Beach and the government had to spend about 200 Crore to prepare its resting place. The state government has asked the defense ministry to bear the expense of its decommissioning in the wake of the financial constraints of the state. A decision will be taken in a week’s time.

AP government is looking to convert the ship into a star hotel and floating museum to attract tourists from across the world. Tourism activities like sea sports, yachting, sailing, gliding and cruising will also be made available on the warship. A five-star luxury hotel with about 1,500 rooms is also part of the plan. Heli-tourism will also be encouraged. All that is likely to cost 700 Crore.

భారత నావికాదళంలో త్వరలో సేవలను ఉపసంహరించుకోనున్న ఐఎన్‌ఎస్‌ యుద్ధనౌక విరాట్‌ను విశాఖలో మ్యూజియంగా ఏర్పాటు చేయడానికి రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం ఏర్పాట్లు చేస్తోంది. ఇందుకోసం సుమారు రూ.1000 కోట్లు వ్యయమవుతుందని నిపుణులు అంచనా వేశారు. సేవల ఉపసంహరణ తర్వాత నౌకను ముంబాయి నుంచి విశాఖ తీరానికి చేర్చి... మ్యూజియంగా, నక్షత్రాల హోటల్‌గా తీర్చిదిద్దడానికి ఈ నిధులు అవసరమని జిల్లా యంత్రాంగం ప్రభుత్వానికి నివేదించింది. ఈ నౌక కోసం మహారాష్ట్ర, తమిళనాడు, కేరళ, గుజరాత్‌ రాష్ట్రాలు ప్రయత్నాలను తీవ్రం చేసిన నేపథ్యంలో ముఖ్యమంత్రి చంద్రబాబునాయుడు ప్రత్యక్షంగా జోక్యం చేసుకున్నారు. ఇటీవల విశాఖ నగర పర్యటనకు వచ్చిన తూర్పు నావికాదళ ప్రధానాధికారితోనూ సమావేశమై చర్చించారు. కేంద్రంలో ఉన్నతస్థాయి వర్గాలతోనూ సీఎం సంప్రదింపులు చేశాక అటు నుంచి సానుకూల స్పందన వచ్చింది. ఈ నేపథ్యంలోనే సీఎం తదుపరి చర్యలకు జిల్లా యంత్రాంగాన్ని ఆదేశించారు. కలెక్టర్‌ ప్రవీణ్‌కుమార్‌ ఆధ్వర్యంలో పర్యాటకశాఖ అధికారులు సమావేశమై యుద్ధనౌక విరాట్‌ను విశాఖ తీరానికి తీసుకొచ్చేందుకు ఉన్న మార్గాలు, ఇందుకయ్యే ఖర్చు, ఇతర సాంకేతికాంశాలపై చర్చించారు. భీమునిపట్నం బీచ్‌లో యుద్ధనౌకను మ్యూజియంగా ఏర్పాటు చేస్తే అన్ని విధాలా బాగుంటుందన్న అభిప్రాయానికి జిల్లా యంత్రాంగం వచ్చింది.

ప్రస్తుతం కొచ్చి నావికాదళంలో ఐఎన్‌ఎస్‌ విరాట్‌ ఉంది. సేవల ఉపసంహరణ కోసం ముంబాయి తీసుకొచ్చే అవకాశాలున్నాయి. అక్కడ వీడ్కోలు చెప్పాక నౌకలోని దాదాపు అన్ని యంత్రాలనూ తొలగిస్తారు. విరాట్‌ సేవలు ఉపసంహరణపై కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వం నుంచి ఇప్పటివరకు స్పష్టత లేనప్పటికీ, డిసెంబరులోగా అధికారిక ప్రకటన వెలువడే అవకాశాలున్నాయని రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వ వర్గాలు భావిస్తున్నాయి. ముంబాయి నుంచి విశాఖ తీరానికి వేరొక నౌక సాయంతో తీసుకురావాలి. ఇందుకోసం 3 నుంచి 4 నెలల సమయం పట్టొచ్చని నిపుణుల అంచనా. దీన్ని భీమునిపట్నం బీచ్‌లో మ్యూజియంగా, హోటల్‌గా అభివృద్ధి చేయాలంటే రెండు నుంచి మూడేళ్ల సమయం పడుతుంది. భీమునిపట్నం తీరంలో యుద్ధనౌకను నిలిపి.. ఒడ్డు నుంచి అక్కడికి వెళ్లేందుకు రహదారి, నౌక ఆవరణలో 300 వాహనాల పార్కింగ్‌కు ఏర్పాట్లు చేయాలి. ప్రభుత్వ ఆదేశాలపై తదుపరి చర్యలు తీసుకుంటామని సంబంధిత అధికారులు ‘ఈనాడు’కు తెలిపారు. ఆర్కే బీచ్‌లో ప్రస్తుతం ఉన్న ఐఎన్‌ఎస్‌ కురుసుర జలాంతర్గామిని మ్యూజియంగా ఏర్పాటు చేసేందుకూ 2002లో విశాఖ నగరాభివృద్ధి సంస్థ (వుడా) దాదాపు రూ. 10 కోట్లు ఖర్చు చేసింది.
