BELLARY: During their heyday, the Reddy brothers would heli-hop between Bellary and Bangalore for even lunch or dinner. But things have not been the same for them over the past one year and they have more often been hitting the roads with their high-end SUVs ranging from Mercs to the latest Range Rover than travelling by air.

They owned three helicopters but now have only one. "Whenever they want to travel in a helicopter or hired aircraft, they need to get in touch with our air traffic control office for traffic and weather clearance. Going by this, their air travel has dipped by 90% past one year,'' said sources at the air traffic control at Jindal's Vijayanagar airport in Bellary. This is also true with the Lads - Eknath, Anil and Santosh - who each own a high-end helicopter.

Sources said the mining lords frequently used helicopter and occasionally chartered flights for long-distance travel collectively averaging 50-75 hours of copter travel in a month during 2008, 2009 and 2010. But 2011 records suggest that they have hardly crossed 10 hours of travel in a month. "The only time Reddys recorded the maximum travel in a month is at the peak of political dissident activities during Yeddyurappa's tenure,'' sources added.

The mining boom and helicopters have gone hand in hand in Karnataka. With China importing abundant ore from Bellary in the early 2000, a handful of mine owners-turned-politicians began hitting headlines by owning helicopters and aircraft. Former minister G Janardhana Reddy, who was a close associate of AP CM late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, owned three helicopters - a 14-seater advanced Bell chopper with night vision facility and two five-seater Bells. Even his political mentor Sushma Swaraj used his choppers to travel whenever she came to Karnataka. Santosh Lad, Congress MLA from Kalaghatagi, also uses helicopter frequently. Besides a Bell five-seater chopper, he also owns an aviation company - Crescent Air Cargo. But sources confirmed that his frequency of travel too has come down by about 80%.

Anand Singh, BJP MLA from Vijayanagar, also owns a helicopter. But he hardly uses it. Sources said that the cost of flying a personal helicopter to and from Bangalore is about Rs 60,000 compared with Rs 50,000 per hour for hired ones.
