In a RTO, that’s where. News correspondent went to register his vehicle today at a RTO in Hyderabad. It took him 2 hrs to get a registered number for his new vehicle. During this time this correspondent spent approximately 60 minutes with a “broker” in the RTA. He was one of the many who was interacting with vehicle owners. In the one hour that this correspondent spent watching the broker, he counted at least 27 people paying him Rs. 2500 as special number requests. Not one of these 27 people was issued a receipt. That is a total of Rs. 67, 500 collected in a span of one-and-a-half hours. This correspondent was told that in busy RTO’s like Khairatabad, the amount can go up to Rs. 1 lac in as little as an hour. This amount was collected in full glare of the officers in the RTO as well as brake inspectors nearby. Nobody batted an eyelid. It was as if this was a very normal practice. And here is the icing on the cake. The broker said the confirmed vehicle number can be checked on the RTO website the next day!
