The Life Time Award is in the name of NTR, that thespian legendary icon of Telugu cinema, and a true son of the soil, for he entered politics late into his career and succeeded against all odds, forming his own party and ruling the State for years with his Telugu Desam party. He was a large framed, booming voiced, considerate individual. Had great affection for me and had made many of my films’ remakes in Telugu. He passed away suddenly while not in office, but always was large enough to make an impact of being in one. His forte was mythological films, and so powerful was his performance of the various Gods that he enacted that when he stepped out to fight an election, the people actually believed that one of the many deities that he acted on in his films had come out to ask them for their votes. In fact on many of his rallies, he would go dressed as one of the many Gods that he had so successfully portrayed.
The effect of his entrance into the political arena was looked upon with huge amounts of scepticism. How on earth would a mere film star, stand the wave of sympathy that was generated for the Congress Party soon after the assassination of Mrs Gandhi , was the oft repeated refrain. Until the results came out, and it was discovered with immense surprise and shock, that whereas all the other opposition parties had been decimated or virtually dismissed, the Telugu Desam was the only other party that was able to get a sizeable representation. In fact after the Congress, which had come about with the largest majority in the history of Indian Parliament, it was the TD party that had the numbers.
So … there was a huge amount of respect and decorum that followed as soon as I attended the award ceremony.
