Param Bir Singh Accuses Maharashtra Home Minister Of Corruption

Param Bir Singh, replaced as Mumbai Police Commissioner over "unforgivable" lapses in the Mukesh Ambani security scare probe this week, delivered a counterblow of stunning proportions on Saturday, accusing Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh of corruption and interference in police work. The explosive accusations prompted calls by the opposition for the resignation of Mr Deshmukh who denied the charges and said he will sue Mr Singh for defamation.

In a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray titled "untruthful statements by the Hon'ble Home Minister, Maharashtra", Mr Singh said the minister had appointed several of his officers - including Sachin Waze who has been arrested in the Mukesh Ambani case - for running an extortion racket.

He said the Home Minister had asked several of his officers to collect money from restaurants, pubs, bars and hookah parlours, setting them a target of ₹ 100 crore every month as recently as February this year.

The former police chief also said that the Home Minister had on several occasions instructed police officers on how to handle cases and file charges, often summoning them to his home to "bypass" him and other seniors.

Action on Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh after corruption allegation against him has created differences in the state's ruling Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi alliance. A top leader of the alliance has told NDTV that Mr Deshmukh has to go as the corruption allegation against him is "serious". Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is also of this view, he said.

Jayant Patil, Maharashtra minister and state unit chief of Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party -- to which Mr Desmukh belongs -- however differed. "The letter (Param Bir Singh's letter to the Chief Minister) is a reaction after Maharashtra Chief Minister and Home Minister decided to take a tough stand. There is no question of replacing Maharashtra Home Minister," he told NDTV.

Mumbai policeman Sachin Vaze -- arrested in connection with the Mukesh Ambani explosives scare case -- was taken to the Mithi river in Bandra East by investigators today to recover evidence that he allegedly tried to destroy. Under his direction, divers recovered a hard disk and number plates of a car which were dumped in the river.

Vaze -- who was initially in charge of the explosives investigation -- is being questioned by the National Investigation Agency, which is looking into the case now. The Maharashtra Anti-Terror Squad has also accused him of being involved in the death of Mansukh Hiran, a Thane-based businessman, who owned the vehicle in which the explosives were found.
