Harbajahan Singh thinks India does not need a coronavirus vaccine

Former Indian off-spinner Harbajahan Singh wondered if India needs a coronavirus vaccine as its recovery rate is much better than the efficacy being provided by the drugs.

The 40-year-old took to Twitter on Thursday to express his opinion regarding the vaccine.

“Pfizer and BioNTech Vaccine: Accuracy 94%; Moderna Vaccine: Accuracy *94.5%; and Oxford Vaccine: Accuracy *90%,” said the former spinner of India’s national team in a tweet.

He then wrote that India’s recovery rate without the vaccine was 93.6% showing that it was much higher than what the efficacy was shown by the vaccine in the trial.

“Do we seriously need [a] vaccine,” wondered Singh.

Singh was a key feature of the India team before his retirement and had played 103 Tests, 236 ODIs and 28 T20Is for his country.

Vaccines do not equal zero coronavirus cases: WHO

The World Health Organization has warned governments and citizens against dropping their guards over the coronavirus pandemic now that vaccination was close, stressing the healthcare systems could still buckle under pressure.

“Progress on vaccines gives us all a lift and we can now start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. However, WHO is concerned that there is a growing perception that the COVID-19 pandemic is over,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a Geneva news conference.

Tedros said the pandemic still had a long way to run and that decisions made by citizens and governments would determine its course in the short run and when the pandemic would ultimately end.

“We know it’s been a hard year and people are tired, but in hospitals that are running at or over capacity it’s the hardest it can possibly be,” he said. “The truth is that at present, many places are witnessing very high transmission of the COVID-19 virus, which is putting enormous pressure on hospitals, intensive care units and health workers.”

The virus emerged in Wuhan, China, a year ago since when more than 65 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 1.5 million have died.

Two promising vaccines could soon receive emergency use authorisation from the US Food and Drug Administration, and some 20 million Americans could be vaccinated this year, helping stem the tide of the virus in the world’s worst hit country.

However, the WHO’s top emergency expert Mike Ryan also cautioned on Friday against complacency in the wake of vaccine roll-out, saying that although they were a major part of the battle against COVID-19, vaccines would not on their own end the pandemic. “Vaccines do not equal zero COVID,” he said.

Ryan said some countries would have to sustain very strong control measures for some time into the future or they would risk a “blow up” in cases, and a yo-yoing of the pandemic.

“We are in a pivotal moment in some countries. There are health systems in some countries at the point of collapse,” he said, without referring to specific countries.

COVOX rollout

The WHO has backed the COVAX global vaccines programme which seeks to ensure equitable distribution of vaccines and to date has seen 189 countries join.

The WHO’s chief scientist said she hoped half a billion vaccine doses would be available for distribution by the COVAX scheme in the first quarter of 2021, with an initial plan to vaccinate the 20% of populations at highest risk, including health workers and people aged over 65.

“The goal is to get at least 2 billion doses by end of 2021 which will be enough to vaccinate 20% of the populations of countries that are part of COVAX,” chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan told the news conference.

This would be enough to “bring to an end the acute phase of the pandemic” by reducing mortality and the impact on health systems, she said.

COVAX is co-led by the GAVI vaccines alliance, the WHO and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). The United States has not signed up to the scheme, having secured bilateral deals.

Yes, we are Indians. Who cares about the death of 6% of them if it is in the interest of Pfizer ? Since when Harbhajan is giving opinion on health. What happens to the cost that was incurred by 93.6% of Indians when they were suffering from Corona ? Now we don't want to spend this on vaccine just to avoid making Pfizer richer ? Then invest on brain and develop ourselves our own vaccine which has better recovery %.

Taking this comment seriously, I will say this guy does not understand the struggle for life.

First, the survival rate claim of 93% is utter bullshit. It’s just throwing a number out there without facts and science behind it.
Second, it’s not just about being infected with COVID. It’s about the impact the whole situation it has on you psychologically.
Even if you have survived COVID, would you prefer others go through the same trauma?
Not to mention the impact it had on millions of jobs.

one question to thread starter . did u  try  coronil (ayurvedic medicine) invented by baba ramdev , bhabhiji papad suggested by  union minister arjun ram meghawal, gau muthra suggested by some ruling party politicians?  :slapn:

i think he seems to have missed the main point and worried more about making an MNC rich. If you ask me vaccines are far better prevention than trying to find a drug which cures a disease. The amount of money which our economy will be investing in curing ourselves from Corona without a vaccine is far higher than the amount which we will spend for vaccine.
