Remembering Bapu ji 💗💗💗

Social media idiots, film directors and jobless actors who easily pass hateful & dismissive judgement: can you pygmies measure the greatness of this man? You who call his assassin a patriot.

He lived in 3 countries. His writings are 100,000 pages in print. He brought an Empire to its knees. He still rules the hearts of billions.

Picking up episodes in a long life is easy. But it is ungrateful to not recognize that we enjoy the Freedom and Rights he and his colleagues fought for before we were born. They made it possible for you to have the Freedom to say the stupid things you are now saying.

Yes, odd, complex, complicated, socially regressive, with a sexuality damaged by religion. Yet, charismatic; inspiring a people to greatness, a master communicator with a great sense of humor, striving for moral ways of social action and personal fulfillment. And a sense of time.

So much he taught in one life time. From cleaning toilets to saving natural resources.

How come you are learning from his weaknesses instead of learning from what makes him better and in some cases a beacon?

Eccentric? Yes. He went bare chested to London for negotiations. With his goat. Called a 'half naked fakir' by a cigar chomping rascal drunk Prime Minister of Britain? Yes.

Genius that discovered the pulse of a people? Oh yes. The wheel, a handful of salt and fasting changed the fate of half a billion people. Why did no one think if it before?

Defiant. Disobedient to tyranny. Loyal to his conscience, sometimes flawed. But very few of us could have done better. Yes he got it wrong about races and the black people. And the Khilafat movement. Let us not follow him there.

No, it is false to say he did not try to save Bhagat Singh. He was against violence, he was also against the death penalty.

Did you hear? From saying 'God is Truth' he moved on to 'Truth is God'. From a supporter of Varna he moved on to say the only weddings he would attend were inter-caste ones. His own son Devdas Gandhi married inter-caste.

Yes, he was a religious reformer. A Saint amongst politicians and a politician amongst Saints he was.  Saints are not what we want, but here was one who spoke of the compatibility of means and ends. He started a cult of mass action.

When India was declared independent, he was nursing the wounded in communal riots. He was nurse to the nation.

And he gave his life. He was assassinated when he was old and frail and disturbed and distressed that his people were killing each other. He was killed for loving his own and for saying one must keep one's word.

Have you no shame?
Or gratitude?
Or a streak of humanity?
Or patriotism?
Shame on you.

Remembering YOU on HIS birthday.

A lot of conversations have started about what Gandhi Ji is. If we can convict people with the benefit of hindsight, all of us would deserve to be sacked and even hanged.  Here are some remarkable facts that makes Gandhi Ji a  Mahatma. Think about the mind boggling numbers and see if you can do any one of them:

1. Gandhiji was jailed eleven times. In all, he spent 11 years and 19 days in jail.

2. Gandhiji, in all fasted 17 times as his way of protest.

3. Gandhi Ji fasted for 21 days at a stretch three times - one for Hindu/Muslim Unity,  another to protest untouchability and third time to protest his detention without charges.

4. In all, 79,000 km is the estimated distance that Gandhiji walked during his campaigns from 1914 to 1948. This is equivalent to circling the Earth twice.

5. Gandhiji walked 18 kms a day for nearly 40 years.

6. Gandhi Ji wore just a loin cloth for 27 years. He gave up his normal wardrobe in Sep 1921.

7. In 1930, Gandhiji was the Time Magazine's Man of the Year.

8. Gandhi wrote a lot if articles and essays. He founded 3 newspapers and wrote 3 books of his own. The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi have 50,000 pages!

9. His book, ' My Experiments with Truth' sold 57.74 lac copies till 2019. The sale in English was 20.98 lac copies. The Malayalam edition.published in 1997 sold 8.24 lac copies.

10. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize five times but never won. Maybe, the Nobel was not worth a Mahatma.

It is the poet Rabindranath Tagore, who gave the title Mahatma to Gandhiji. His resilience, steely resolve, determination, non-violent ways to protest, struggle, suffering and still a desire to do good can never be found in another. Even today, when any leader, from left to right to far right visit any foreign country, they espouse the teachings of Gandhiji to get any credibility or recognition.

Try a million times, but for India, there is only one Mahatma and One 'Father of the Nation.
MAHATMA GANDHI.

His intention was right. We cannot be split into 2 countries purely based on religion. But it never happened.
