Not clear

seat by seat indicated are based purely on the popularity of the political party during exit polls and not the individual candidates and hence can not be responsible for any variation of winning and losing.

Exit poll predicts TDP's exit, Jagan Reddy's rise in Andhra Pradesh

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's exit from the Narendra Modi-led NDA over the special-category status Andhra Pradesh in March doesn't seem to be propelling him across the line, the exit poll data suggest.

YSR Congress chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy looks set to secure a clear mandate in Andhra Pradesh elections on the back of his outreach efforts and support from SC/ST and Muslim voters.

According to the India Today-Axis My India exit poll, the incumbent TDP is heading into opposition.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's exit from the Narendra Modi-led NDA over the special-category status Andhra Pradesh in March doesn't seem to be propelling him across the line, the poll data suggest.

Nor did his last-minute sops to the electorate, a string of schemes worth around Rs 30,000 crore covering almost the entire voting population of the state.

In 2014, Chandrababu Naidu's TDP won 102 of Andhra Pradesh's 175 assembly seats and Jagan Mohan Reddy's party 67.

This time around, the YSR Congress Party is poised for a sweep, winning 119-135 seats, the exit poll forecast.

The TDP, on the other hand, is expected to get only 39-51 seats.

The setback to Chandrababu Naidu is not limited to the assembly elections alone.

According to the India Today-Axis My India exit poll on the Lok Sabha elections, the TDP's list of MPs could shrink from 15 in 2014 to anywhere between four and six in 2019.

The YSRCP is likely to better its previous performance more than two-fold, from eight-five to 18-20 Lok Sabha seats this time, the exit poll suggests.

WHAT'S WORKED FOR JAGAN

YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's 341-day padyatra spanning over 3,648 km seems to have worked in his favour.

During his march ending in January this year, he reached out to the electorate, promising doorstep governance and greater decentralisation of power.

The YSRCP has been heavily banking on the SC, ST and Mulsim votes, which together constitute 33 per cent of the state's electorate.

Data from the exit-poll show large sections of the three communities have thrown their weight behind Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Around 52 per cent of the SCs, 54 per cent of the STs and 50 per cent of the Muslims voted in favour of the YSRCP, the findings reveal.

Actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan's Jana Sena seems to have harmed the TDP more than YSRCP, cutting into Chandrababu Naidu's core Kapu vote bloc.

Himself belonging to the same community, Pawan Kalyan is likely to have secured the support of 13 per cent of the Kapu voters, leaving a bigger chunk of 42 per cent with YSRCP than with the TDP (39 per cent).

In 2014 state elections, a difference of just 0.3 per cent of votes between the TDP and the YSRCP translated into 35 assembly seats, which drove Chandrababu Naidu to power.

According to the India Today-Axis My India exit poll, the YSRCP's vote-share is expected to go up by 3.4 per cent to around 48 and TDP's dip to 40 per cent, widening the gap between the two parties to eight per cent.

A VIOLENT ELECTION

Andhra Pradesh, a state with 88 per cent literacy, voted on April 11. The state election was marred by violent clashes between the TDP and the YSRCP activists.

Trouble during the day prompted authorities to extend voting overnight till 3-4 am at some polling stations. By the time polling closed, election authorities recorded a turnout of 79.8 per cent.
