Unofficially at least 10 times the number as India underreported the casualties to avoid international criticism. Goa lo only about 100 as the Portuguese didn't put up much of a fight except symbolic resistance. My point here is not about the wisdom of starting a war now, but a counterargument to your statement that wars haven't achieved much in recent times. Indian armed forces have served her extremely well in war by increasing her territory, kicking out unwanted forces like the Nizam and the Portuguese, and by breaking the enemy into two.
