Kia Motors, which is set to enter the Indian market later this year, has commenced discussions with the Andhra Pradesh government to establish a testing facility near its manufacturing unit, reports Sharmistha Mukherjee. The company, which is partly owned by Hyundai Motor but treats it as a competitor, has invested $1.1 billion to set up its factory at Anantapur. The investment on the testing unit will be outside this, but how much that will be has not been fixed yet, Kia Motors India MD Kookhyun Shim said. Mr Shim told ET that "At present, we use the same R&D Centre as Hyundai in Hyderabad. But we are considering separating this team.”

It has set up quality centres for Kia products, the first of which will hit Indian roads in the second half of 2019.

The company is evaluating if the proposed testing facility can also be utilised for testing and engineering electric vehicles, Shim said, adding that the required resources would be allocated accordingly.

He said that "This facility, we can put in there eco-friendly product development. Those kinds of things are not fixed. So, we cannot tell you the investment. But the fact is we are already discussing those kinds of things with the AP government.”

The establishment of the testing centre is part of Kia's plans to be among the top five carmakers in India within three years of commencing sales operations. The test centre, when established, will enable engineers to evaluate data in real time, respond faster to the needs of the local market and help speed up product launches. Kia has plans for product launches in every six months starting this year, to realise annual volume of 300,000 units by 2021 in India.
