Rajakeeyam Posted January 7, 2019 Share Posted January 7, 2019 Modi Government led Union Cabinet clears Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 which gives citizenship to Non Musl'ims from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan. This was a Election promise of the BJP in 2014. The fresh bill seeks to amend the Citizenship Act 1955 to grant Indian nationality to people from minority communities - Hind'us, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Pars'is and Christi'ans from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan after six years of residence in India instead of 12 even if they don't possess any proper document. The Congress, Trinamool Congress, CPI-M and a few other parties have been steadfastly opposing the bill claiming that citizenship can't be given on the basis of religion as India is a secular nation. Some opposition members have even given dissent notes in the report.
