No Telangana tableau in this year’s Republic Day parade

HYDERABAD: The state is set for a disappointment this Republic Day as its tableau has again failed to make the cut for the prestigious parade. Disappointed officials said their dream to get a tableau on display during the Republic Day parade on January 26 has evaporated. “It is clear that this year too, Telangana, will not participate in the celebration,” a highly-placed source in the Information and Public Relations (I&PR) department said.

The state government chooses concepts based on traditions and culture background for the Republic Day parade and in 2015, the theme of Bonalu festival was accepted by the committee. “Since then, none of our themes were chosen,” the I&PR source said.

Officials said they carried out certain modifications, but the tableau committee did not approve it. “Now that we haven’t heard from the defence secretary’s office, which deals the subject at the Centre, means we again missed the opportunity this year too,” said another official under the condition of anonymity.

This year, the Centre had chosen ‘Gandhi Connect,’ as the theme to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. According to the Centre’s recommendation, all states had to prepare their ‘tableaux on Gandhi’s role and accordingly, authorities too started planning, officials said.

The government had initially sent a detailed report along with the photos pertaining to Gandhi’s influence here, highlighting a digital museum set up in 2012 at Hyderabad. The museum has imparted more than 1, 50,000 hours of Gandhian inspired education to more than 50,000 students in the last three years. “We have also constructed Bapughat, where Gandhiji’s ashes were immersed at the confluence of rivers Musi and Esi on February 12, 1948 at Langar Houz,” said an official.

While Sabarmati Ashram Preservation and Memorial Trust has a rare diary with jottings on Mahatma Gandhi’s visit to the region, which later became Andhra Pradesh, authorities said they did not have much information about it. “We do not have evidence regarding Gandhi’s visit to Telangana region. The Tableau committee may have refused our proposal on those grounds,” added the official.
