Remembering the  legendary leader on his tenth death anniversary

Leading a traditional and conservative lifestyle, he dedicated his life to the development of agriculture sector and betterment of farmers’ lives. He was a man of principles and never courted controversies in his life time. Coming from a humble background, he rose from the position of a village Sarpanch to the Cabinet Minister with his sheer dedication, devotion and discipline.

Politicians come and go but only a few leave a mark that would etch in the minds of people. Chanamolu Venkat Rao was one such giant personality who transformed the lives of people with his untiring efforts till his last breath.

During his 50-year illustrious political career, he greeted every individual with his trademark smile. Being an unimpeachable person, his unblemished character coupled with integrity served as a role model to the future generations. He was fondly known as ajatshatru as he led a life sans enemies.

Revealing this to Amaravati Times, KopuriSubba Rao, who served as an advisor to Chanamolu Venkat Rao, reminisced, “In person, Venkat Rao had no grudge on anyone. During our conversations, development of villages was always uppermost on his mind. He never judged people. Thanks to his untiring efforts, a road from Vijayawada to Vissannapeta was laid bettering the lives of people especially farmers who eulogised him as a great visionary”.

A man of integrity

“He was a man free from deception and corruption. He would never shy away from problems of the people. KGY Road was yet another important proposal from him after ‘Vijayawada to Vissannapeta’ road. He was also responsible for laying many pucca roads in villages and quenching the thirst of rural people. He travelled extensively and redressed the grievances sometimes on the spot winning the hearts of the people. He also strived to provide power to several villages through a cluster scheme with the help of K.L. Rao. With the support of the then CM YS Rajasekhar Reddy, a flyover was built which was later named as Chanamolu Venkat Rao Flyover,” Mr Subba Rao recalled.

Pulipaka Thomas, ex-MPP, who also shared a chat with AT said, “thoughChanamolu came from a zamindar family, he never showed his aristocratic leanings. His humbleness and humility were the greatest assets that he was bestowed with. He used to be very patient, kind and was very keen to solve the problems.”

“He was a people’s man and always looking into their needs. He gave a new lease of life to many people by providing employment to them. He was a happy-go-lucky person who unceasingly stood for his people. I am a great admirer of him and his humble nature was a true inspiration for me,” said Thomas with teary eyes.

His personality was such that nobody dared to point a finger at him and question his integrity.

Being from agricultural family, he loved farming. He used to go to his farms regularly. He cultivated mango, oil palm, sugarcane and paddy in his fields. He was also the  Director in Oil Palm Development Board. During his tenure as Agriculture Minister, he visited several countries for promoting mango exports for the benefit of farmers.AT_JULY_EDITION-032_edited1-300x217.jpg

Political innings

His political career was kicked off in 1957 when he was elected as the sarpanch of his village-Velagaleru. While working as a sarpanch, he served as the vice-president of ‘MylavaramPanchayatiSamithi’ from 1959 to 1964. His sarpanchenure was ended in 1967.

Along with Chanamolu, PinnamaneniKoteswarRao,Mandali Venkata Krishna Rao, Kakani Venkata Ratnam, Komati Bhaskar Rao and KopuriSubba Rao took active part in politics at that time. Chanamolu was a staunch follower of the Congress leaders Kakani Venkata Ratnam and GottipatiBrahmaiah.

First MLA seat

It was in 1967 that Chanamolu clinched his first MLA seat. From 1972 to 1978, he again served as MLA for the second time. In the middle of the tenure, i.e; in 1974 when JalgalamVengala Rao was CM, he was appointed as the Cabinet minister for P.W.D (R&B). He built three bridges around Mylavaram and laid thar roads of 500 km in length. He also established the office of the executive engineer in Mylavaram itself.AT_JULY_EDITION-033_edited2-300x194.jpg

Stone laid for projects

In 1976, he built a guest house and with the support of K.L Rao, mega projects like Vijayawada Thermal VidyuthKendram, APHMEL and Railway Wagon Workshop were taken up in Ibrahimpatnam and Kondapalli. During 1978 and 1982 he got elected as MLA for the third time.

In 1981, he was appointed as the agricultural minister and soon he took notice of the shortage of water that people were facing. He was quick enough to release the water from Nagarjuna Sagar left canal to Mylavaram branch canal and solved the water crisis. He also made sure that people got an adequate amount of drinking water too.  During this period, he proposed VTPS Return Water Scheme with NABARD support.

In 1988, NTR, the then CM, laid the foundation stone for a scheme which later was named as TarakaramaIift Irrigation Scheme. He also solved the perennial water problem in Mylavaram by releasing Krishna water through a pilot project.

Famous personalities like Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi campaigned for him in elections.

Away from politicsAT_JULY_EDITION-033_edited3-300x161.jpg

In 1983, yet again he participated in the elections but was trounced. In 1985, he tasted the success by becoming MLA for the 4th time. In 1994, he again contested as MLA but was defeated at the hustings. From 1994 to 2004, he was away from the active politics due to health issues.

Back with a bang

But in 2004, with the insistence of Y.S. Raja Sekhar Reddy and LagadapatiRajagopal, he participated in MLA elections and won with 13,000 majority votes against VaddeSobhanadeswar Rao. It was his 5th time of being elected as an MLA from Myalavaram Constituency.

Contribution to his village

His contribution to his own village was phenomenal. He established a Z.P High school in a memory of his father. Primary Health Care center, veterinary hospital, co-operative society building, KalyanaMandapam and library were some of the prominent things that he had done to his village. He brought out the water pumping scheme for irrigation. During T.D.P Government when Chandra Babu Naidu was the CM, he played a key role in getting special grant of Rupees 40 Lakhs for the development of roads and drainages.

Key role in Polavaram canal design

He played a key role in designing Polavaram Canal route in Velagaleru village which was already on the banks of another irrigation canal thus leaving the village sandwiched between the two canals. He gave 40 acres of his family’s ancestral property to avoid inundation of the village during floods by facilitating alignment of Polavaram canal.

He passed away on 7th July, 2008 leaving a legacy that will be remembered by future generations forever.

VipinBoyapati has urged the Government to install his grandfather’s statue at Ibrahimpatnam village. Hope his wish will realize soon.
