Following this, protesters in Mumbai and Pune took to the streets to display their outrage. Here is all you need to know about what happened and the current situation: *The Bhima Koregaon battle saw the forces of the East India Company defeat Peshwa Bajirao II's army, on January 1, 1818 *An obelisk, that the British erected in remembrance of the battle, has become an important symbol of Dalit assertion. Thousands of Dalits pay respects to the memorial every year *Some Dalit leaders commemorate the British victory, as it is believed that soldiers from the Mahar community - then considered untouchable - were part of the winning force. However, some right-wing groups in Pune had expressed opposition to the celebration * Violence erupted in Pune+ after an argument between locals and those on their way to the war memorial *Atleast one died and three others were left injured in the ensuing clashes between villagers from Koregaon Bhima, Pabal and Shikrapur and a large group commemorating the battle *25 vehicles were torched and over 50 were damaged in stone pelting *The police stopped traffic on the Pune-Ahmednagar highway for some time following the incident. RKumar Posted January 3, 2018 Share Posted January 3, 2018 కొరేగావ్లో కొరివి ఎందుకు? 200 ఏళ్ల కిందట యుద్ధమే నేపథ్యం సంస్మరణకు యత్నించిన దళితులు బీమా కొరేగావ్ ఘటనపై ఇప్పుడు మహారాష్ట్ర మండుతోంది. కొరేగావ్లో 200 ఏళ్ల కిందట జరిగిన యుద్ధాన్ని స్మరించుకోవడానికి దళితులు చేసిన ప్రయత్నం హింసకు దారితీసింది. ఇంతకూ కొరేగావ్లో అప్పట్లో యుద్ధం ఎందుకు వచ్చింది? ఆ ఘటనను సంస్మరించుకోవడానికి ప్రయత్నిస్తే ఇప్పుడెందుకు అల్లర్లు జరిగాయి? అన్నది అత్యంత ఆసక్తికరం. కొరేగావ్ యుద్ధానికి ప్రాధాన్యం ఎందుకంటే.. ఈస్టిండియా కంపెనీ తరఫున యుద్ధం చేసిన బలగాల్లో దాదాపు 500 మంది మహర్ దళితులు. బాంబే నేటివ్ ఇన్ఫాంటరీకి చెందిన వారు. పీష్వాలు అగ్రవర్ణ బ్రాహ్మణులు కాగా.. మహర్లను అంటరానివారిగా చూసేవారు. ఏమిటా యుద్ధం? కొరేగావ్ అన్నది పుణె నగరానికి 40 కిలోమీటర్ల దూరంలోని చిన్న గ్రామం. అక్కడ మరాఠా పాలకుడు బాజీరావ్ పీష్వా-2కు, బ్రిటిష్ ఈస్ట్ ఇండియా కంపెనీకి మధ్య 1818 జనవరి 1వ తేదీన యుద్ధం జరిగింది. బాజీరావ్ పీష్వా వద్ద 30 వేల మంది సైన్యం ఉండేవారు. అందులో 5 వేల మందిని తొలుత ఆయన పుణెపై దాడికి పంపారు. మార్గమధ్యంలో వీరికి 800 మంది కంపెనీ సైన్యం అడ్డు తగిలింది. దీంతో కొరేగావ్లో ఉన్న కంపెనీ సైన్యాల్ని మట్టుబెట్టడానికి 2వేల మంది పదాతి దళాల్ని పీష్వా పంపారు. కంపెనీ సైనికులు వారిని సమర్థంగా నిలువరించారు. రెండు సైన్యాల మధ్య 12 గంటల పాటు హోరాహోరీ పోరు సాగింది. 600 మంది చనిపోయారు. పుణె నుంచి ఈస్టిండియా కంపెనీ అదనపు బలగాల్ని పంపుతోందని అనుమానించిన బాజీరావు తన సైన్యాల్ని ఉపసంహరించారు. పుణెపై దాడి యోచనకు బాజీరావు స్వస్తిచెప్పారు. యుద్ధం ఎందుకు జరిగింది? 18వ శతాబ్దం చివరి దాకా దక్కన్ ప్రాంతంపై పీష్వాలు అధికారాన్ని చెలాయించారు. 1802 నాటికి బ్రిటీష్ ఈస్ట్ఇండియా కంపెనీ దక్కన్ ప్రాంతంలోని మరాఠా పాలకులు(పుణెలోని పీష్వాలు సహా), గ్వాలియర్లోని సింధియాలు, ఇండోర్కు చెందిన హోల్కర్లు, బరోడాకు చెందిన గైక్వాడ్లు, నాగ్పూర్కు చెందిన భోన్సేల(వీరందరూ మరాఠాలే)తో శాంతి ఒప్పందాలు చేసుకున్నారు. రాబడుల్లో వాటాలపై ఇరుపక్షాల మధ్య అవగాహన కుదిరింది. వీటి ప్రకారం.. పాలకులు చాలామంది భూయాజమాన్య హక్కు, రెవెన్యూ, ఇతరత్రా సౌకర్యాల్ని వదులుకున్నారు. అయితే బాజీరావు పీష్వా-2 మాత్రం మొండికేశారు. రాబడులు ఇవ్వడానికి ససేమిరా అన్నారు. దీంతో 1817 నవంబరులో బాజీరావును ఖడ్కీ యుద్ధంలో ఈస్టిండియా కంపెనీ ఓడించింది. ఆయన సతారాకు పారిపోయారు. పీష్వాను జనరల్ స్మిత్ నేతృత్వంలోని కంపెనీ సైన్యం చుట్టుముట్టినప్పటికీ.. ఆయన రకరకాల దారులు మారుస్తూ.. హఠాత్తుగా పుణె వైపు దారి మళ్లారు. బాజీరావు పుణెపై దాడికి సిద్ధపడుతున్నాడని 1817 డిసెంబరు చివరి నాటికి కంపెనీ సైన్యం అనుమానించింది. పీష్వా వస్తున్న మార్గం వైపు సైన్యాల్ని పంపింది. ఈ రెండు సైన్యాలూ కొరేగావ్ వద్ద ఎదురుపడడంతో యుద్ధం జరిగింది. మహర్లు ఎవరు? అప్పట్లో మహర్లను అంటరానివారిగా చూసేవారు. వీరిని సైన్యంలో నియమించుకునేవారు. 17వ శతాబ్దంలో శివాజీ మహారాజు అనేకమంది మహర్లను మరాఠా సైన్యంలోకి నియమించారు. పానిపట్టు యుద్ధం సహా అనేక యుద్ధాల్లో పీష్వాల తరఫున కూడా మహర్లు పోరాడారు. అయితే పీష్వా-2 హయాంలో మహర్లకు, పీష్వాలకు మధ్య వైరం శృతిమించింది. తమను మరాఠా సైన్యంలో చేర్చుకోవాలని మహర్లు విజ్ఞప్తిచేసినా.. పీష్వా నిరాకరించారు. ఇదే అదునుగా ఈస్టిండియా కంపెనీ వారికి అవకాశం కల్పించింది. యుద్ధానికి ఎందుకు ప్రాధాన్యం? మహర్ల విషయంలో పీష్వా-2 అత్యంత దారుణంగా వ్యవహరించేవారని చరిత్రకారులు చెబుతారు. ఆయన హయాంలో మహర్ దళితులకు చాలా అన్యాయాలు జరిగాయి. బాజీరావ్ చేతిలో అణచివేతకు గురైన మహర్ దళితులు ఆయనపై ప్రతీకారం తీర్చుకున్నారని, బీమా కొరేగావ్ యుద్ధానికి ప్రాధాన్యం అందుకేనని దళిత మేధావులు, రచయితలు, కార్యకర్తలు చెబుతారు. కొరేగావ్లో నేలకొరిగిన దళిత సైనికుల పేర్లతో 1851లో అక్కడో స్మృతి చిహ్నాన్ని ఏర్పాటుచేశారు. 49 మంది మహర్ దళిత సైనికుల పేర్లను ఆ రాతి చిహ్నంపై రాశారు. బీమా కొరేగావ్ యుద్ధం జరిగి 109 ఏళ్లు అయిన సందర్భంగా 1927 జనవరి 1వ తేదీన డాక్టర్ బి.ఆర్.అంబేడ్కర్ ఆ ప్రాంతాన్ని సందర్శించారు. కొరేగావ్ యుద్ధాన్ని కులతత్వానికి వ్యతిరేకంగా జరిగిన పోరుగా అభివర్ణించారని అంటారు. అప్పట్నుంచి ఈ ఘటన మరోసారి ప్రాధాన్యం సంతరించుకుంది. ఇప్పుడెందుకు గొడవలు? బీమా కొరేగావ్లో సంస్మరణ కార్యక్రమాన్ని అఖిల భారతీయ బ్రాహ్మణ మహాసభ, హిందూ అగాదీ, రాష్ట్రీయ ఏక్తామాతా రాష్ట్రీయ అభియాన్లాంటి గ్రూపులు గట్టిగా వ్యతిరేకిస్తున్నాయి. ఇది కుల సంబంధ సంస్మరణ, జాతి వ్యతిరేకతతో కూడుకున్నదని ఈ గ్రూపులు వాదిస్తున్నాయి. అయితే ఎవరికో వ్యతిరేకం కాదని కార్యక్రమ నిర్వాహకులు అంటున్నారు. - ఈనాడు ప్రత్యేక విభాగం Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Dalits used to be part of Peshwa's army before but due to Bajirao peshwa-2 Mehar's have to come out of army & british made them join their army. Mehar's stopped Bajirao Peshwa-2 attack on Pune. Shivaji developed sentimental affection for hinduism like many modern day sudras do and did the actual hard work of forming an army and defeating might mughals and forming an empire. But brahmins hit him hard - they refused to do his pattabhishekam. Shivaji had to pay a huge amount to some varanasi brahmins (like modern day sudras keep paying for temples and pujas but never having a role in service to gods) and the varanasi brahmin gave him tilak with his foot - can you see the insult ? But despite all this Shivaji became a protector of cows and brahmins. But when the sudra did all the initial hardworking the scheming brahmins came back for influence. Once appointed as Peshwas (prime ministers) they became the defacto rules. After initially expanding they were ultimately defeated by more egalatarian forces of british and muslims.
