TU 142M aircraft museum project makes headway

Visakhapatnam: In a crucial move, the Andhra University authorities have taken the decision to hand over 1 acre land on its Beach Road campus for setting up the TU142M aircraft museum.

The executive committee of AU, which met here on Wednesday, said the land would be handed over to the district authorities at the earliest.

Initially, the aircraft museum project hit a deadlock with the site owner Andhra University demanding compensatory land for it. The university has already given around 19 acres of land for widening of roads at various places across the city in the past few years. But the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has not compensated it with land till date. Irked by the attitude of GVMC staff, the AU administration had written a letter to district collector Pravin Kumar and other departments seeking compensation.

The state government is keen to berth the decommissioned TU142M aircraft on Beach Road and convert it into a museum at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore. GVMC has also recently demolished four shops on Beach Road for establishment of major tourism projects including the TU-142M. The district administration has set a deadline of August 15 for the museum.

Apart from the decision to part with land for the aircraft museum, other major decisions taken during the AU executive committee meet include provision of provident fund for workers employed on daily wages (28 days) at the university. The executive committee also decided that the teaching associates self-financed courses would be employed only in places where there was a dearth of teachers and the number would be strictly monitored.

Regarding absorption of teaching staff in Tadepalli Gudem and Kakinada PG Campuses of Andhra University,

Meanwhile, the members decided in favour of absorbing non-permanent teaching staff into the Tadepalli Gudem and Kakinada PG branches of the university on a regular basis. The issue had been pending for quite a while. More importantly, it was decided that the university would conduct a free audit to decide upon benefits in case of promotions and retirement.

Signature Tower land for MNCs investing in GIC

AP policy will attract funds innew-age technologies: Official

The State government is in talks with multinational corporations for allotment of plots at the site proposed for the Signature Tower for setting up of global in-house centres (GIC).

A high-level delegation, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, during the visit to the U.S. had held advance stage talks with some of the MNCs during which they evinced keen interest in investing in Hill No.3 of Rushikonda, part of the Madhurawada IT Special Economic Zone.

The GIC is an alternative model to third party vendors leveraging global talent to implement transformation agenda. Of the 1,000-odd GIC in India, almost 35% are located in Bengaluru. Confirming this to The Hindu , Special Chief Secretary and IT Advisor to Chief Minister J.A. Chowdary said the government had already unveiled a policy on the GIC.

“The MNCs, most of them being Fortune 500 companies, prefer to have their Indian subsidiaries specialising in cutting-edge technologies. The effort to showcase Visakhapatnam as a fintech valley has caught their imagination,” he said.

The government has decided in-principle to allot 10 acres in the city to ANSR Consulting to attract an investment of Rs. 1,000 crore and create 10,000 jobs in 10 years.

The Signature Tower project has been shelved due to poor response from private developers.

Vizag int’l air cargo terminal yet to take off; blame lack of infrastructure, staff

Visakhapatnam: Lack of infrastructure and insufficient staff have become major roadblocks for the international air cargo terminal to take off at Visakhapatnam airport.

The terminal was inaugurated almost two year ago, but the authorities concerned failed to acquire necessary logistics like cold storage facility, ground handling machinery, X-Ray scanners, additional customs personnel and more ground staff for dealing with large cargo. Owing to the delay in making the terminal operational, the government had been losing crores of rupees every year as many pharma and apparel companies in Vizag and flower traders from Kadiyam in Rajahmundry depended on Hyderabad and Chennai airports for exports, director of AP Chambers of Commerce and Industry O Naresh Kumar said.

"Currently, more than 4,000 tonnes of pharma cargo from coastal AP region is being exported from Hyderabad. If we can provide facilities, exports are expected to rise to 3,000 crore per annum from Vizag alone," he added.

Brandix Apparel at Atchyutapuram SEZ has been depending on Chennai for its exports as well as imports of raw material from across the country and foreign nations. Speaking to TOI, company's India partner Dorai Swamy said if Vizag international cargo terminal started operations, it would give them a big boost as manpower, money and time would be saved.

"We have to deliver our orders within a week's time. But it has been getting delayed by 20 days as we depend on other states. We produce five lakh lingerie for Victoria's Secrets every day. If we do not send the products in time, the style goes out of vogue. This is fashion market and, in case of delays, the value of the model comes down," he said. According to sources, around 40 tonnes of finished products of Brandix would go for export from Chennai.

The AP Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, G Samba Siva Rao, said that apart from seafood, pharma and apparel exports, there were many sectors and much scope for growth in domestic and international cargo. He said even Vizianagaram had agriculture-based industries apart from food processing units. It also had iron alloy based industries. There were rich resources base of granite, cashew, rice, coconut, fruits, beach sand minerals in Srikakulam district.

IT scenario brightens in Vizag

A view of IT SEZ at Rushikonda in Visakhapatnam

‘Major players see exciting opportunities in the city’

The focus on attracting big ticket projects to Visakhapatnam is expected to bear fruit with several IT majors evincing interest in setting up their campuses in the city.

Highly-placed sources told The Hindu that during a chat with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu recently, the top brass of Infosys hinted at the possibility of establishing a 23,000-seater campus in the city provided the government extended all the required support.

When contacted, AP Economic Development Board CEO J. Krishna Kishore said road shows and investor meets held in India and abroad evoked a good response from global companies. He, however, did not name any firm that had committed any major investment in the near future.

Oracle and Google had already made enquiries with the AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation and Software Technology Parks of India to know about facilities being available in the city to open their development centres. Tech Mahindra has been allotted 10 acres at Rushikonda for developing its second campus in the city. Wipro, which has its campus in the city, is awaiting permissions to develop it as a Special Economic Zone.

MoUs signed

As part of promoting Visakhapatnam as a Fintech valley, MoUs have already been signed with Visa and Thomson Reuters and in-principle understanding has been reached with Masters to open their office in the city. Paytm has already started its operations at Fintech Tower at Rushikonda.

International Institute of Digital Technologies run by the AP Electronics and IT Agency (APEITA), an autonomous society floated by the government to promote IT and electronics, will start its campus in the city soon with a PG programme in artificial intelligence and machine learning to create industry-ready professionals.

The Chief Minister, during one of his visits to the city, had announced that they were in talks with Microsoft for opening its development centre. There is buzz in IT circles that it could come up either in Visakhapatnam or Amaravati if everything goes well.
