Tesla's giant battery is proving its worth

Elon Musk’s giant lithium ion battery in South Australia has responded in record time to the first power failure since it was installed as a back up power source.

It comes just weeks after Musk won a $US13 million bet that he would supply South Australia with the Tesla battery within 100 days or it was free.

State Energy Minister Tom Koutsantonis says the investment in the battery has already proved its worth, exceeding expectations in its first test.

Last week, when the coal-fired Loy Yang power plant in Victoria tripped and went offline, the Tesla battery delivered 100 megawatts into the national electricity grid in 140 milliseconds.

“That’s a record,” Koutsantonis told 5AA radio.

“The national operators were shocked at how quickly and efficiently the battery was able to deliver this type of energy into the market.”

By comparison, South Australia’s Torrens Island power station would take half an hour to an hour to energise and synchronise into the market, according to Koutsantonis.

Following a successful testing period in November, the battery, which is paired with French energy business Neoen’s Hornsdale wind farm 230km north of Adelaide, was turned on at the start of the month.

The project is part of a $550 million plan by the state government to guarantee energy supply following a statewide blackout last year that turned into a national political debate over energy security and costs. The Tesla founder got involved with the infrastructure project after Atlassian’s Mike Cannon-Brookes made a bet with Musk on Twitter last March.

Avaada To Invest Rs 3,500-Crore For 500 MW Solar Projects In Andhra Pradesh

http://energyinfrapost.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Avaada-to-invest-Rs-3500-crore-for-500-MW-solar-projects-in-Andhra-Pradesh-701x332.jpg

New Delhi: Clean energy firm Avaada Power today said it will invest Rs 3,500 crore to develop 500 MW utility-scale solar projects in Andhra Pradesh.

"Our business strategies are interwoven with the government's mission of promoting renewable energy in the country. We are making significant investments in innovative clean energy solutions with a focus on solar and wind energy sectors," company's Chairman Vineet Mittal said in a statement.

Avaada Power recently committed Rs 10,000 crore investment in Uttar Pradesh to develop 1,600 MW solar projects.

"We have set a target of achieving 5,000 MW capacity in the next four years. We aim to invest Rs 25,000 crore and we have embarked on a journey towards generating sustainable energy not just in India but across Asian and African countries," he added.

Avaada plans to set up mega projects in solar and wind energy in a phased manner, Mittal said.

He further said the investment in Andhra Pradesh will generate enough clean energy to sustainably power over 2.40 million households across the state.

Andhra Pradesh government has set a target to achieve 18,000 MW renewable energy capacities by the year 2021-22.

The investment by Avaada Power is expected to generate more than 1,200 employment opportunities.

The MoU is a step in the direction of achieving the government's renewable energy objective of reducing around 8,32,200 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, which this project should help mitigate, Mittal added.

Kurnool, Anantapur producing 4,000 mw green power

Anantapur: Kurnool and Anantapur districts together are producing 4000 mw of green power. Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu the other day had a word of praise for the district which is producing 3000 mw of power. He said that there is no power shortage problem and that the district is producing power on a mega scale to cater to any number of new industrial projects.

  • The power generation includes solar and wind power
  • Another 1000 mw of power production (solar and wind) is expected after the completion of ongoing projects in the 2 districts

New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of AP (NREDCAP) which is promoting green energy on a massive scale was instrumental in producing 1,460 mw of wind power and 457.9 megawatts of solar power.

National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) which signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government for establishing a 1000 mw solar power generation plant at NPKunta near Kadiri has already been producing 250 mw of solar power in the first phase.

It is expected to produce 1000 mw of solar power by the end of 2018.  Four other developers are producing 41.9 mw bringing the total to 291.9 mw. In addition to these, 62 wind power promoters were producing 1,460 mw of wind power by March 2017. Anantapur alone is producing about 3000 mw, which is a combination of wind and solar energy.

Dubbed as green corridor, Rayalaseema particularly Kurnool and Anantapur will have a total power generation of 4000 megawatts, 1000 mw in Kurnool and 3000 mw in Anantapur districts. The district will witness an additional power generation of another 1000 mw after the completion of the existing projects.

NREDCAP is overseeing establishment of Power Pooling Stations(PPS) at Kambaduru, Madancheruvu,Borampalle and other places to facilitate grid connection so that the power pooled from the sub-station areas could be transferred to the 220 kv sub-station at Borampalle and from there to the 400 kv sub-station at Uravakonda.

NREDCAP district manager Kodandarama Murthy told 'The Hans India' that 30 years ago AP was brushed aside as a ‘no wind state’ but today it is producing 3000 mw of wind power out of the Union government’s national target of 10,000 mw.

Among the several players, Suzlon group, Gamesha, Inox, Wind World, Regen Power Tech, General Engineering, Tata and BHEL are major ones in wind power generation. There are solar and wind projects in Kalyandurg, Uravakonda, Kadiri and Ramagirimandals.

Andhra Sugars of the industrialist MullapaudiHarischandra Prasad was the first person to set up a 3 mw wind power project at Ramagiri, followed by many others groups including BHEL, APSRTC, Navabharath Group, Deccan Cements, Rayalaseema Paper Mills, BSM Spinning Mills, Priyadarshini and ILFS groups. Altogether, they produce 51.74 mw of power and supplying the same to the Power Grid.
