The late YSR Reddy's son-in-law Anil Kumar will have his second coming this Christmas. The 39-year-old pastor, who is married to Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy's sister Sharmila Reddy, had stopped preaching after YSR's death in 2009.

This December, Brother Anil Kumar resumes teaching the gospel to large congregations, starting in Rajahmundry, Vijayawada and Miryalguda. The turnout is predicted to be much larger than the one Kumar attracted at the previous Jesus Christ Blessings Festival in Secunderabad - held in YSR's presence - in 2008. The evangelist has also drawn up plans for a Crusades Mission in February 2011, during which he will travel extensively through the villages of YSR's native district, Kadapa.

YSR and his family being Christians, Anil Kumar, who was born to Hindu Brahmin parents, converted to Christianity after his love marriage to Sharmila in 1995. It is his second marriage. "I've been an evangelist since 1998," he says. Though Jagan's critics call him the religious conscience-keeper of the family, Kumar claims his main pursuit as a preacher is to propagate his eponymous Anil World Evangelism. "I have confined myself to preaching to small Christian groups in villages. I help them build small churches in place of huts with thatched roofs where Sunday sermons are held. The funds largely come as contributions from the tens of thousands who come to listen to me. Shortfalls are met by money from family business," Kumar told INDIA TODAY.

He also appears on TV for special religious sessions. The preacher has released an album 'In Christ' as well. Kumar is widely travelled, having addressed congregations in the US, New Zealand, Dubai and Muscat. He became popular in Andhra Pradesh with the publicity overkill for the Jesus Christ Blessings Festival he founded.

However, it received flak from another self-styled evangelist K.A. Paul, founder of the Gospel to Unreached Millions and Global Peace Initiative, who blamed YSR for discrimination. Texas-based Paul, also from Andhra Pradesh, alleged that the late chief minister was being vindictive. The priest alleged he was denied permission to hold public meetings because he did not contribute to YSR's election fund. Consequently, the TDP and BJP accused YSR of nepotism for promoting his son-in-law's religious activities.

Kumar ostensibly stays clear of politics but during the 2009 elections, the state police, following a tip-off, apprehended him and two fellow preachers withRs.10.4 lakh at a lodge in Karimnagar. They were let off after questioning. Subsequently, the TDP complained to the Election Commission that YSR's son-in-law was using religion as an instrument to solicit votes for the Congress. They also alleged that Kumar was conducting religious meetings all over the state and distributing pamphlets titled "Prayer for Elections". The TDP claimed that similar prayer meetings helped YSR form the government in 2004. The power of prayer may yet help his son, Jagan.
