  1. By nature she has a Mother or a big Sister instincts - opposition treats her with lot of respect
  2. Money power on show in Vinukonda M N Samdani, TNN Apr 13, 2009, 05.30am IST VINUKONDA: This small municipal town looks like a big village even now. In the tobacco rich Guntur district but away from Guntur city, Vinukonda was once a stronghold of Maoists. The fear of Maoists was such that many landlords had to scoot away to other towns. Luxury cars were a rarity for years in this part of the world and even the local MLAs used to travel in their followers' vehicles. But, it's all history now. Imported cars zoom about on the semi-laid roads this election season, while party leaders carry configured laptops and gizmos. The entry of tobacco giant Chebrolu Narendranath of Congress has changed the very `poll environment' in this perennially drought-hit constituency. Narendranath's high-tech campaign and money power is now visible all over the place what with several party workers carrying high-end mobile phones to keep the poll managers continuously updated. A core team with his relatives and friends has been formed to analyse the developments from time to time. Narendra is up against TDP's GVSSR Anjaneyulu and Prajarajyam Party's Bolla Brahmanaidu in this Kamma-dominant constituency. Curiously, all the three candidates are Kammas. In 2004, Anjaneyulu's wife Leelavati contested against Congress sitting MLA Makkenna Mallikharjuna Rao, who has been replaced by Narendra, son of veteran Congress leader Chebrolu Hanumaiah. Not surprisingly, the local party workers are amused at the way Narendra's camp is organising the campaign. "We thought that the election would be over by the time they come to know about the topography of the constituency. But we are shocked to see the remotely classified data pertaining to the entire electorate such as caste, age, gender, local groups, party affiliations, faction with every key leader arriving along with Narendra," a Youth Congress leader said. Though a majority of the leaders were at loggerheads with Mallikharjuna and celebrated his ouster from the race but they soon realised that Narendra's hi-tech campaign is not their cup of tea either. "They (Narendra camp) suspect everyone of us though we have been die-hard Congressmen. There are no human values and respect. It all boils down to sheer money power," fumed a Congress veteran from Nuzendla. The local leaders are particularly upset when they came to know that every bit of information is being cross-checked by Narendra's poll managers. "Narendra, a city slicker, has landed in a completely rural constituency and it is becoming hard for us to convince the locals as our candidate cannot speak in Telugu for even five minutes," lamented a key leader in Narendra camp. Upset over the way the campaign is being run, a septuagenarian Congress leader of Savalyapuram said: "We have heard about government putting prices on the heads of naxal leaders in the area. Strangely, our leaders are being tagged with some price by this new candidate. He might have put a price on every head in the constituency but he cannot win the hearts of the voters." Strangely, local issues like severe drinking water crisis, irrigation water to the tail-end areas, better roads to the Lambada thandas and electricity to SC colonies have been put on the backburner. Is it a case of "paisa me power hai, paramatma nahi?"
